1) (10 p.) The solubility product of cadmium hydroxide (Cd(OH) 2) is 5.9x10-15 M3. Will a cadmium
concentration of 1.0 mg/L be soluble in water at pH 10? (note that Cd= 112 g/mol; O = 16 g/mol)

2) (10 p.)A metal plating firm is installing a precipitation system to remove zinc. They plan to use a pH
meter to control the feed of hydroxide solution to the mixing tank. What pH should the controller be
set at to achieve a zinc effluent concentration of 0.8 mg/L? The K sp of Zn(OH)2 is 7.68x10-17 M3, and the
molecular weight of Zn is 65.38 g/mol.

3) (10 p.)What concentration of HCl, in mg/L, would be required to decrease the pH of wastewater
initially containing 100 mg/L NaOH to 5? H = 1 g/mol; Na = 24 g/mol; O = 16 g/mol; Cl = 35.5 g/mol.
Assume that there are no weak acids (or buffers) in this waste.

4) A completely mixed (CSTR) treatment process has four mechanical aerators with SOTR’s of 1 kg O 2 per
h per horse power (HP) each. The treatment plant is operated at sea-level. The oxygen demand of the
treatment process is 121 kg/h in summer when the wastewater temperature is 20 oC, and is 85 kg/h in
winter when the wastewater temperature is 16 oC. The influent dissolved oxygen concentration and the
process operating oxygen concentration are both 2 mg/L. Assume θ = 1.024 and for this wastewater α
= 0.9 and β = 0.95.
a) (10 p.)Compute the horsepower (HP) required for each of the four aerators under summer
conditions.

b) (10 p.) Compute the horsepower (HP) required for each of the four aerators under winter
conditions.

c) (5 p.) Which condition (winter or summer) controls your aerator selection? Briefly explain why?

5) A completely mixed activated sludge plant treating an industrial wastewater has four mechanical
aerators. The treatment plant is operated at sea-level. The oxygen demand of the treatment process
during the summer is 121 kg/h and the wastewater temperature is 28 oC. The oxygen demand during
the winter is 85 kg/h, and the wastewater temperature is 18 oC. Aeration studies have been performed
in the laboratory using an aeration vessel with a diffuser stone that used compressed air. The K la values
found were 0.388 h-1 for wastewater, 0.526 h -1 for reactor effluent and 0.554 h -1 for tap water. All K la
values were at the same temperature. The saturation value of oxygen in tap water, wastewater and
effluent was 8.68, 8.2, and 8.3 mg/L, respectively. The mechanical aerators to be used transfer 1 kg O 2
per h per HP (SOTR). The operating dissolved oxygen concentration in the reactor is 2 mg/L.
Determine:
a) ( 5 p.) the α value for the mixed liquor.

b) (5 p.) the β value.

c) (10 p.) the horsepower (HP) required for summer conditions. Saturation dissolved oxygen
concentration ( Cs ) = 7.92 mg/L at T = 28 oC.

d) (10 p.) the horsepower (HP) required for winter conditions. C s = 9.54 mg/L at T = 18 oC.

e) (5 p.) which condition summer or winter controlled aeration requirements? What horsepower should
be used?

6) (10 p.)A drinking water supply at Kepez, Çanakkale has been contaminated by trichloroethylene. The
average concentration in the water is estimated to be 6000 µg/L. Using the following design
parameters, estimate the diameter (D, m) of a packed tower stripping column to reduce the water
concentration to the discharge limit of 1.5 µg/L. Column height (h) = 6 m; Henry’s constant = 6.74x10 -3
m3.atm/mol; Kla = 0.720 min-1 ; R = 8.206x10-5 m3 atm/K.mol; Air flow rate = 60 m 3/min; G/L = 18;
Temperature = 25 oC
