Abstract

This study was conducted on account of challenges on

student’s English proficiency in the usage of conjunctions. The

study used Conjunction worksheet for the investigation to

determine if there is a significant improvement in the usage of

conjunctions or the linking of phrases of students, one among the

competencies in grammar and awareness as well as to develop

skills and mastery in using the connectors. To attain this

study's objective, the researchers used a pretest-posttest

control group design, a type of design under the actual

experimental setup. Twelve (12) grade seven students were divided

into two groups, the first group being the controlled group and

the experimental group as the second. Both groups took pretest

prior to the online modular learning instruction without

intervention (controlled group) and online modular learning

instruction with implementation of the action and intervention

(experimental group). Conjunction Worksheet was used as an

intervention for the experimental group while the controlled

group followed the DepEd modular learning procedures. In

conclusion, the findings of this study verify that using the

conjunction Worksheet is an effective intervention to improve the

competency in linking of phrases or the socalled

conjunctionsKeywords: conjunction worksheet, experimental group,

conjunction modular learning.

Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the Study

Instructional written materials play important roles inside the classroom. Worksheets have

been used in teaching practices for a long time. According to Lesley & Labbo, (2003)

worksheets have even become a driving force of curriculum in some countries. Teachers

use worksheets for the purposes of supporting the learning of students. With that

mentioned, many studies suggest that well-designed worksheets have had positive impacts

on students’ learning achievement (Sasmaz-Oren & Ormanci, 2012).

English has been used as the lingua franca also known as the

universal language because it was used worldwide to interact and

communicate. It recognizes the solidarity of nations throughout

the world for it holds the key of unity and competence.

Additionally, English is perceived as a difficult subject

especially for those who aren’t used to speaking the English

language. The usage of English language is very essential that we

cannot join and deal with the other countries.

A global survey conducted from 2018 that was released in December 2019, called Program

for International Student Assessment (PISA) revealed that among 600,000 students

worldwide, Filipino students got a rating of 340 points in reading comprehension, lower

than the average of 487 points. Consequently, in the said study, Philippines ranked last
among 79 countries. Additionally, in a recent roundtable discussion organized by the

British Council, stakeholders agreed that the country needs to step up its efforts in

improving the teaching and learning of English.

Proficiency Countless numbers of newspaper have written reports

about how the English proficiency rate has increased in the

Philippines. National Statistics Office (NSO) data showed that

literacy rate of Filipinos increased by 5 percent from 2000 to

2010, according to the statistical body’s 2010 Census of

Population and Housing (CPH) data. (Lazo, 2013) This can be

reflected on the answer of Ms. Cayat: In the country, there is a

60% literacy rate and 40% proficiency.

According to Porciuncula, (2011) English is one of the compulsory

subjects in the Philippines because aside from Filipino, it is

considered the official language used in different transactions

at schools and other institutions in the country. However, Over

the past years, the country's ranking has been declining - from

13th place in 2016, 15th place in 2017, 14th place in 2018 and

20th place in 2019. With that said, Undersecretary

NepomucenoMalaluan said that they launched the "SulongEduKalidad"

program in February to address challenges in the quality of basic

education. It focuses on four aggressive reforms in basic

education: (1) K to 12 curriculum review and update, (2)

Improving learning environment, (3) Teachers upskilling and

reskilling, and (4) Engagement of stakeholders for support and

collaboration.

In the Philippine education system, intervention materials are highly regarded as tools for

remediating poor achievements of the learners. SIM or Strategic Intervention Material

refers to a teaching aid introduced into the teaching strategies to stimulate the activity of

the students and thereby increased their level of understanding (Dy, 2011). It is

strategically prepared and designed for teaching remediation for low achievers in specific

subject. It is given after the regular classroom instruction to students who were not able to

grasp the concepts of the subject matter.

One of domains in the k to 12 curriculum is Grammar in which demonstrates command of

the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Compose clear and coherent sentences using appropriate grammatical structures which is

subordinate and coordinate conjunctions (EN6G-IIh-8.3 EN6G-IIh-8.4). Conjunction

is one of the items in grammar, body rules specifying how meaning

are created in English, word that links words, phrases and

clauses. It can be said that conjunction is “linking” or

“joining” words which joined together, then any word that occur

between others would be conjunctions. It is an essential part in

using English language as it is necessary tool in communication.

With that said students must learn to identify the types of

conjunctions, uses conjunctions in sentences correctly and

appropriately and links sentences using correct and appropriate

connectors.

A survey conducted to the students of Ordovilla revealed that there is a weak or poor

usage of conjunctions. Therefore, the researchers aim to develop worksheets to help

improve the usage of conjunctions. In this study, the use of conjunction worksheets was

investigated to determine if there is significant improvement in student’s usage of

conjunctions. With that said the intervention that researchers utilized will help teachers

facilitate learning online or at home because this study intended to provide worksheets that

would help teachers and learners achieve the competencies.

Unfortunately, the current health crisis which is COVID-19 that

we are all facing has led to a sudden change not only in our

everyday lives but also affected the education sector. The

initial step that the Philippine Department Education took was to

cancel the classes and other school activities in compliance to

the guidelines that the national government has provided for

health and safety. Since then, the Philippine Education

Department put their efforts to come up with a plan in order to

support the sector in continuously providing quality education

for the stakeholders despite the challenges.

In line with this, the researchers aim to create an intervention to aid the poor

performance of students in Ordovilla with the proper usage of conjunctions through

strategic intervention material. This would help them improve and develop concepts on the

proper usage of conjunctions. Moreover, teachers would be able to develop their own SIM

to improve their students performance.

Purpose of the Study

This study aimed to offer ways on how to improve student’s

usage of conjunction through worksheets. Specifically, this study

sought to answer the following questions.

The Problem:

General: This study determined the effectiveness of improved

Worksheets in teaching proper usage of conjunction among Grade 6

pupils.

Specific: This research answered the following questions:

1. What is the level of performance of the respondents in pretest

before the use of improved worksheets in teaching proper usage of

conjunction?

2. What is the level of performance of the respondents in

posttest after the use of improved worksheets in teaching proper

usage of conjunction?

3. Is there a significant difference on the performance level of

the respondents in pretest and post test before and after the
used of improved worksheet in teaching proper usage of

conjunction?

4. Based from the results of the study without strategic

intervention materials in teaching proper usage of conjunction

can be proposed?

Scope and delimitation

The main purpose of the study was to determine the

effectiveness of improved worksheets in teaching proper usage of

conjunction among Grade 6 pupils of Ordovilla Elementary School

on the school year 2020-2021.

The respondents of this research were the grade 6 students

who are enrolled in Ordovilla Elementary School. The selected

respondents were given questionnaires and the gathered data were

tabulated and analyzed by the researchers.

Operational Definition of Variables

The following terms are defined operationally:

Conjunction a group of words that connects sentences, clauses and

words.

Effectiveness successful in producing the desired effect of

measures.

Improved worksheets is a sheet of paper on which one performs

work.

Performance act of performing; a carrying out, a piece of work an

exhibition in a theatre or place of amusement.

Strategic intervention Materials

Post test. Test given to training participants after the

Instruction is presented or completed.

Pre test to test in advance, where a questionnaire is tested on a

small sample of respondent before full-scale study.

Methodology

Research Design
This action research used a quasi-experimental research design. A quasi-experimental design aims to establish a
cause-and-effect relationship between an independent and dependent variable. It includes manipulated independent
variable but lacks important controls. This type of research design aims to evaluate interventions but that do not use
randomization. Like randomized trials, quasi experiments aim to demonstrate causality between an intervention and
an outcome ( G.Eliopoulos et.al, 2004)

In this study, the target participants were given pretest about the proper usage of conjunctions. After the
pretest, the researchers were also given SIM which js the conjunction Worksheets to help them develop
concepts on the proper usage of conjunctions. Then, the researchers conducted the post test to test the
effectiveness of the SIM to students and to test the significant difference on the performance level of the
respondents in pretest and post test before and after the used of improved worksheet in teaching proper
usage of conjunction

Research Locale
This study was conducted at Ordovilla Elementary School at

Ordovilla, Victoria, Oriental Mindoro. This school promotes ....

(aalamin ko pa.)

Respondents of the Study

The respondents were chosen through purposive sampling

technique which resulted to five Grade 6 students from Ordovilla

Elementary School.

Research Instrument

The improved worksheet in teaching proper usage of

conjunction focused on three kinds which are and, or, but. The

researchers used pre test and post test questionnaires about the

proper usage of conjunction. In gathering the data, the research

instruments used were pre test and post test.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researcher secured letter of approval and asked the

respondents for permission to conduct the study. After that the

researcher conducted pre test before the use of strategic

intervention materials. The researcher implemented strategic

intervention materials. Lastly, the researcher conducted post

test.

Direction for answering the test will be explicitly stated

to guide the respondents in answering the test. The researcher

will see to it that all questions will be answered completely.

After the retrieval of the questionnaire, the researcher

will tabulate and process the data manually. Quantitative data

will be analyzed and the results will be interpreted. Data matrix

will be based on tables to organize, summarize, and analyze the

data.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The researchers used the following statistical treatment to

determine, analyze and interpret the data that gathered.

Mean was used in determining the performance level of the

respondents in pre test and post test.

T-test was used in determining significant difference of pre test

and post test before and after the used of strategic intervention

materials.
