CALCULATION OF THE CHARACTERISTIC VALUES OF

A SINGLE WELL
On the basis of the formulas for single well capacity Q, radius range of
depression cone R and for the assumed depression s values, the well
characteristics should be determined.

According to Dupuit: Q=

According to Kusakin: R = 575⋅ s ⋅ H w ⋅ k f

where :
Q − well performance, m3 / s
k f – filtration coefficient of the aquifer, m / s
s − depression of water in the well, m
H w − thickness of the aquifer, m
R − radius of the depression cone, m
r − well radius, m

Assumed four values of depression s (s=1,2,3 and 4m),

for which values of radius of depression cone R and
well efficiency Q were calculated:

R = 575⋅ s ⋅ H w ⋅ k f

DETERMINATION OF THE MAXIMUM WELL CAPACITY

Determine the maximum theoretical well capacity according to the

formulas for unconfined water table:

Qmax th = 2 ⋅ π ⋅ r ⋅ H w ⋅ v per

The permissible inlet velocity (v for water in the well must be calculated
per)

according to the formula:

 kf
v per =
45
The permissible inlet velocity v
per:

0.000246
v per = = 0.000348m / s
45

The maximum theoretical well performance:

Qmax th = 2 ⋅ π ⋅0.275⋅34.5⋅0.000348 = 0.0207m3 / s

On the basis of the calculations above, a graph should be drawn up to

calculate the operating efficiency of the well. The total length of the over-
filter and under- filter pipes should be taken:

- for a well made in a layer with a unconfined water table: 2.0÷3.0m

Than, from the graph should be read:

- exploitation efficiency of the well,
- exploitation depression.

On the basis of the data calculated above and assuming the total length of
the over-filter and under-filter pipe equal to 3.0 m, the graph presented in
Figure 1 has been prepared. Next we should read from the chart:

- exploitation efficiency of the well:

3
Q = 0,010m /s

e
- exploitation depression: s =1,12 m
e

The values of filter length l is determined:

f
The values of filter length lf is determined : Hw = ln + l p + l f + se

For total length of over-filter and under-filter pipe ln + lp=3 m

l f = H w − (ln + l p ) − se = 34.5 − 3− 1.12 = 30.38m

For exploitation depression se radius of the depression cone is calculated

Re:

Re = 575⋅1.12 ⋅ 34.5⋅0.000246 = 644 ⋅0.0921 = 59.31m
