DEMONSTRATION LESSON PLAN IN GRADE 9

ENHANCED MATHEMATICS

July 24, 2019

Grade 9 – Lanthanum
(2:15 – 3:45)

I. LEARNING COMPETENCY
Solves quadratic equations by extracting square roots. (M9AL-Ic-2-Id-1)

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic: Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting Square Roots
B. Reference: Learner’s Material for Mathematics Grade 9 pp. 18 - 26
C. Materials: DLP, Laptop, Speaker, Basket, Plastic Eggs, Paper Strips, Manila Paper,
Pens, Ruler, Masking Tape, Whistles
D. Mathematical Skills:
Illustrating, Analyzing, Evaluating, Solving
E. Mathematical Concepts:
 Quadratic Equation that can be written in the form x2 = k can be solved by
applying the following properties:
1. If k > 0, then x2 = k has two real solutions or roots: x = ± √𝑘 .
2. If k = 0, then x2 = k has one real solution or root: x = 0.
3. If k < 0, then x2 = k has no real solutions or roots.
 Extracting Square Roots is a method of solving quadratic equation x2 = k.

III. PROCEDURE: 7 E’s

A. Engage (10 minutes)

 Pass the Basket and Crack the Egg Game
Directions: The teacher lets the learners form a big circle and follow the given
instructions:
1. As the music plays, the teacher will pass the basket to a learner.
2. The learner will then pass the basket to the person beside him/her and do the
same by continuously passing the basket to others until the music stops.
3. When the music stops, the learner who is holding the basket will draw an egg
and crack it.
4. Read the question from the egg and solve it.
5. The learner who gets the correct answer will be awarded five points in his/her
recitation.

B. Elicit (10 minutes)

 Think-Pair-Share
The students will have their pairs and they will do the following tasks:
1. Recall what you have learned in solving linear equations with one unknown.
2. Write it down on your notebook.
3. Share with your pair what you have written on your notebook.

Solve with your pair the linear equation flashed on the screen:
1. 3(x + 7) = 24
2. 2(3k – 1) = 28
C. Explore (10 minutes)
 Small Group Activity
The teacher will divide the class into 5 groups and instruct them to solve quadratic
equations under Activity 3: Air Out!!! on page 19 of their module.

Problem:

Mr. Cayetano plans to install a new exhaust fan on

his room’s square-shaped wall. He asked a carpenter to
make a square opening on the wall where the exhaust
fan will be installed. The square opening must have an
area of 0.25m2.

D. Explain (10 minutes)

 Each group will present their answers on the board and explain how they found the
length of a side of the wall.

E. Elaborate (30 minutes)

 Presentation of different quadratic equations that is written in the form ax2 + c = 0
and x2 = k.
 Discussion of the mathematical concepts and giving of varied examples that will
elaborate further the lesson.
Examples:
1. Find the solutions of the equation x2 – 16 = 0 by extracting square roots.
2. Solve the equation t2 = 0.
3. Find the roots of the equation s2 + 9 = 0.
4. Find the solutions of the equation (x + 4)2 – 25 = 0.

Try this!
Direction: Solve the following quadratic equations by extracting square roots.

1. t2 = 49
2. r2 – 100 = 0
3. (x – 4)2 = 169
 Generalization
1. How do you solve quadratic equations?
2. How is extracting square roots applied in solving quadratic equations?
3. How many solution/s of a quadratic equation can be obtained if k > 0? k = 0?
and k < 0?

F. Evaluate (15 minutes)

 Car Race Game
Solve quadratic equations by extracting square roots through a car race game.
Direction:
1. The class is divided into 5 teams.
2. Each team is asked a question. If they answer correctly, their team color
button is clicked to move their car.
3. Five correct answers will cross the finish line and win the race.

(Questions will be drawn on a box)

G. Extend (5 minutes)

Agreement: Read in advance the next lesson or method in solving quadratic equations
on pages 27 to 34 of your module and then, answer the following
questions for our next meeting activities:

1. What are the different techniques of factoring polynomial expressions?

2. How to solve quadratic equations by factoring?
3. Solve the following quadratic equations by factoring:
a. x2 + 7x = 0
b. 6s2 + 18s = 0
c. t2 + 8t + 16 = 0
