UNIT 5

TASK 1:

1. You are working on a course project focused on product development for a beverage
company, and you have been asked to propose ideas for a new beverage. You think that the
company should create an energy drink. Would you choose the same information as you did
at the beginning of the task (see page 190)?

Ans : Yes, I would choose the same information given in the task to write my paper

1. Introduction of how energy drinks came into existence and when

2. Which are the leading countries and brands
3. Comparison of the contents and which drinks are on the top and why people prefer it
more than the other brand
4. The data in fig 1 table has a graph of growth in sales and the revenue earned since 2002-
2006
5. The ill effects of the contents of these drinks on the health of consumers need to be
included in detail.
2. You have been asked to write a recommendation about including energy drinks in campus
vending machines. Would your selections from the source text change?

Yes , My selection from the source text would change , even though the text/research has many
information included from the various resources included, but still It lacks in giving the details on ill-
effects as suggested in the point 9 and 10 in the text: The acute and long term effects of excessive
and chronic consumption of these additives alone or in combination with caffeine are unknown.
Although the full impact of the rise in popularity of energy drinks has yet to be realized, the
possibility of negative health consequences should be considered and may be grounds for pre-
emptive regulatory action.

3. What might be the yes-no questions underlying the other two scenarios? What is your
stance?

Ans :

My stance in in the above two scenario is , No , I would not allow the sale of Energy drinks to take
place on the campus as the acute and long term effects of excessive and chronic consumption of
these additives alone or in combination with caffeine are unknown. The possibility of negative
impact on the health is the main grounds of consideration for the refusal of energy drinks on the
campus .
TASK 5

Re-write the excerpt at the bottom of page 202 using because and lead to, changing the vocabulary
and grammar as necessary. Here are two examples using due to. Example: due to Safe driving
practices may be compromised due to the presence of technology in cars that is not directly related
to vehicle operation including cell phones, music players, and GPS. Drivers today may fail to
concentrate on the road and other drivers due to the presence of technology such as cell phones,
music players, GPS, and other technology that is unrelated to driving.

nondriving-related devices, such as car stereos, mobile phones, and, more recently, navigation
systems, divert drivers' attention increasingly more away from the primary sources of information
necessary for safe operation of the vehicle: the road and other road users.

1. Use because :

The safe driving operations of the vehicles , road and other road users are in jeopardy because of
extensive use of the navigation system in addition to the car stereos and mobile phones which
diverts the drivers attention attention of the drivers are diverted because of extensive usage of the
recent navigation systems

2. Use lead to:

The widespread use of navigation systems, car stereos, and mobile phones, which divert drivers'
attention, leads to jeopardize the safety of vehicles, roads, and other road users.

Passive safety systems help lessen the impact of driving accidents. They do nothing to contribute to
preventing drivers from getting into an accident.

Important points : Passive safety systems and their impacts

Relationship between the points: Passive safety systems , their impacts and contribution

Linking phrases or expressions to connect the points : Impact, contribute, getting into , lessen

Possible synonyms: Effect, consequences , help, be partly responsible , involve, decrease;  reduce:

Paraphrasing

a. Passive safety systems help to reduce the severity of car accidents. They make no
contribution to reducing the likelihood of a driver being involved in an accident.

b. Passive safety systems aid in reducing the severity of automobile accidents. They
contribute nothing to lowering the likelihood of a driver being involved in an accident.
TASK 14

Text 1:
1. Eating, chewing, slurping. Snoring, Mobile ring tones, Alarm clocks and car
alarms.
2. He concluded that visualizing the unpleasant process of making a sound is
a significant factor in the perception of unpleasantness.

Instructor comments :
1. Unreasonable
2. Reasonable
3. Reasonable
4. Reasonable
5. Reasonable
6. Reasonable
Text 2 :
In my opinion both the text have very confusing analogies for instance :
As noticed, while the first text , It is accurate in terms of content, it fails to highlight
the similarities and/or differences between the various studies. As a result, it's
difficult to tell what point is being made. The author has passed up an opportunity to
reveal a broader understanding, making it more difficult for the reader to find the
important information on his or her own.
In the second text, the author demonstrates an ability to see connections,
overlapping points of view, and significant differences in the research. This is
accomplished because the author structured the discussion around the topics
addressed rather than the studies at hand. It is difficult enough to decide what
information to include in a summary of a single article, but working with two or more
sources clearly complicates your job.
