Chapter 1
Introduction
From the stone age to the present, humanity has developed their own way of
interacting and conversing with their own kind. Our ancestors started
communicating using only gestures, body language, and other more ways that
we still do not know anything about until this very day. It was up to them how they
would interpret each action that the other person does because they do not have
an established language that they could use to communicate.
After quite a while, humanity evolved. They have created and established
towns, cities, and countries using the help they got from their peers. They were
able to attain these groundbreaking achievements because they built
communities where they communed with their own kind, sharing ideas and
thoughts to each other, which were used to benefit their own people. For short,
they were connected.
Now, in this contemporary world, technology taking is over the lives of
humans. It is being used to make every one’s lives much easier than before.
Communication is one of them. People do not have to leave their houses to call
their loved ones who work in a faraway place because they could just use their
phones to call and facetime them. Everyone is also able to let others know what
they are currently doing by sharing pictures and texts in their social medias, like

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and many other more applications & websites that
can be used for communicating.
Technology nowadays can be used to do whatever you want. Meet new
friends, play games with the people you are close with, and people can even pay
money using only their phones. They literally do not need to leave their houses to
interact with others. This craze mostly affects the younger generation, which are
teenagers. The leading question which a lot of people are asking, does
technology affect the social life of teenagers? Is technology the main reason why
teenagers are slowly disconnecting from their communities, from the society?
These will be further explained in this study.

Conceptual Framework
The conceptual paradigm shows how the study will flow. The research begins
with providing and assessing the factors that can lead a teenager into
disconnecting themselves with the use of modern technology and including the
amount of time that they spend into it. The teenagers’ age, gender, and
knowledge will also be taken account of to determine the perception of each of
them regarding their use of technology. The desired outcome should provide the
answer on how technology affects the social life of a teenager.

This research aims to provide answers to the following questions:
1. How does technology affect the social life of teenagers?
2. What are the factors that contribute to the disconnection of teenagers from
their communities?
3. Why do majority of teenagers prefer to communicate online rather than
offline?
4. Is technology really the reason why teenagers are isolating themselves?

Scope, Limitation, and Delimitation
The researcher will focus on finding out how technology affects the social life
of a teenager, while also discussing its advantages and disadvantages. The
researcher will also discuss the factors that lead teenagers into isolating
themselves from the society, and if technology really is the reason as to why
teenagers are disconnecting from it.
The study is only limited to 50 teenagers of Angelicum Immanuel Montessori.
The researcher will not be able to get a precise answer from the teenagers as all
of their answers will vary person to person.
The researcher will not focus too much on other factors that can affect the
social life of a teenager because the study will be focusing on how technology
affects it but will still mention and explain it to further discuss the study. The
researcher will also not be discussing the point of view of the older generation as
the research will be seen in a teenager’s perspective.

Hypothesis
The researcher of this study theorizes that technology does affect the social
life of a teenager, significantly. Though technology does have many positive
influences, the negative ones would still outweigh it. The researcher
hypothesizes that this study will be able to become an instrument for the
teenagers to voice out what they really feel, and what they are experiencing in
this current society. The researcher also predicts that technology is not the only
thing that affects the social life of a teenager.

technology affects the social lives of teenagers, also mentioning other factors
that could also influence it. This study will help the current society understand
what teenagers are really going through in the modern times, why they end up
isolating themselves by the use of technology.

Chapter 2
Review of Related Literature
Studies by both Coyne et al. (2020) and Nowland et al. (2018) noticed that
one drawback to online socializing is that it can be used as a way for adolescents
to escape or numb the emotions they feel in their offline world when they are
having issues that they do not want to deal with. In the past, when adolescents
had problems with peer pressure, taunting, or bullying, they could avoid or
escape these issues by going home or withdrawing from social situations.
However, social media can be accessed at any time of the day or night, from any
location, and has the potential to be witnessed by a much larger audience than a
typical offline situation. This can lead to a further separation of offline
relationships, a withdrawal from offline social interaction (Nesi et al., 2017), an
increase in feelings of loneliness or symptoms of depression (Nowland et al.,

2018), and an increase in suicide-related outcomes (Twenge, Joiner, et al.,

Researchers have found that social media can have a positive effect on
adolescents. Some adolescents fear or otherwise have difficulty telling someone
in person about their feelings of anxiety, depression, or sadness. Research by
Underwood and Ehrenreich (2017) found that many adolescents use social
media to connect with peers who provide feedback and encouragement for the
physical and emotional problems they are experiencing. Raskauskas & Huynh
(2015) researched adolescents’ coping strategies in response to stressful events
and concluded that adolescents often turn to social media and the internet for
advice and coping strategies. The help that the adolescents received from these
sources led them to more quickly recover from the stressful event. Research on
how adolescents communicate through different types of social media platforms
by Elmquist & McLaughlin (2018) found that adolescents are better able to
express themselves on social media and thus better able to find the support,
understanding, and acceptance then they might otherwise find in person. (The

An increase in the use of online technology among adolescents has influenced
their sense of connectedness in various ways. Some studies suggest that there
are positive aspects of online technology, especially in providing opportunities for
youth to develop and maintain a sense of connectedness in an online
environment, while other studies suggest that young people’s use of online
technology creates the opposite and leads to feelings of loneliness, depression
and social anxiety, and creates mental health challenges among adolescents.
Although a substantial number of studies suggests that young people stay in the
digital landscape for social activities, there have been few studies that have
addressed its effects on feelings of connectedness and mental health. This study
reports the findings of a systematic review of recent research addressing the
associations between adolescents’ sense of social connectedness and Internet
technology use. Adolescents are becoming accustomed to technology and
remaining in the virtual playground in part to experience the positive
reinforcement of social connections. Although Internet technology might provide
additional opportunities for adolescents to seek emotional connection with friends
and school, this study suggests that real-life social skills are still a necessary
foundation for them to use technology in a beneficial way. Taken collectively, the
articles reviewed suggest that adults who interact with youth should incorporate
Internet technology into their work and consider the development of a digital

Modern day technological advancements are constantly seen throughout
every aspect of life. Cell phones, portable Internet availability, laptop computers,
iPods, mp3 players of every brand, and many other devices, are everywhere.
They seem to possess unending possible detriments, but, along with such
issues, technology also has positive impacts on today’s youth. In some
situations, the Internet and iPod prevent sociability, though in others they may be
the cause of increased social activity. Overall, modern technology has the
capability to bring people together as well as enhance the social abilities of the
today’s youth; however, if used without discretion, can also create a less
interactive generation, frequently depending on technology for contentment.
The immense capabilities of the Internet today are astonishing and offer many
positive opportunities for teens. Primarily, the Internet makes sharing information
fast and simple, despite factors that in other cases would prohibit such simple
distribution. According to Jean-Francois Coget in Source C, “With the Internet,
information can be transmitted and received with ease at any time of the day to

and from any number of friends.” It is possible to send videos, pictures, papers,
projects, and a quantity of other things with the click of a button. The transfer can
happen in seconds. The amazing capability of modern-day Internet simplifies
teenage life, by providing a way to convey knowledge. Another way in which
Internet proves positive is by providing a way to keep in touch with friends and
family worldwide, or just across town. Whether it’s a friend that switched schools
and is never around, or a family member in London, the Internet makes it
possible to email, instant message, and even video chat. Such qualities of
Internet communication bring people together with more frequent contact,
boosting sociability and relationships. In addition, the Internet also has the
capability to, “foster openness, self-confidence, and a greater sense of ease, and
comfort in dealing with others” (Source C). Since it is not obligatory to reveal
physical appearance or social status over the Internet, it grants an opportunity to
be a completely new person, who is entirely open and confident. Internet chats,
even with mere acquaintances, can supply a chance for socially challenged
teens to experience a form of social interaction, in order to create a sense of
composure. Modern day Internet advancements not only offer an easier way to
share information, but also contribute to sociability by providing a way to
communicate with distant friends and family, as well as giving socially challenged

Technology has become invincible part of people's life. It is a driving force,
which is transforming our lives & shaping our futures. We cannot even imagine
our lives without technology. The technology around us is changing every day
and will keep on changing. New generation kids are also enchanted by the
technology. Kids have no choice but to somehow get influenced by the ever-
growing technology. Kids are using this technology for large part of the day, not
only because they love the technology, but the fact is that they have never lived
without it. Understanding teenagers and technology seems a little overwhelming.
As they spend most of their time on technology. Sometimes it seems that
teenagers' lives revolve around technology like smart phones, internet, social
media, apps, games, television etc. Though there are many benefits which teens
get from the technology like easy access to information to inform and educate
them, maintain and develop supportive relationships, form their identities,
promote a sense of belongingness by being connected with friends and being
part of various communities. Although digital technology has boosted children's
talent for multitasking, their ability to process information deeply may be
deteriorating (Carpenter, 2010). Heavy use of technology can lead the teenagers
to various problems. It can cause cyber bulling, trolling, Isolation, exposure to
inappropriate material, inappropriate relationships. Use of technology can be
addictive too. It can also lead to some other serious physical & mental problems

like obesity, computer vision syndrome & depression etc. The new technologies
we have today are immensely powerful. The human brain is attracted to visually
presented information. Video games, television, movies and various applications
on mobile phones magnetize the attention of teenagers. In this study the
researcher aims to identify the kind of impact technology have on teenagers.
How this changing technology affects their personal lives & their relationships
with their family, friends & relatives, and also to understand the line between the
safe use and overuse of technology. This research will also analyze the
advantages & disadvantages of technology used by teenagers. (RP Technology

Mobile phones have been spreading in the world faster than prior
communication technologies (i.e., the television, the Internet). The adoption of
the device has become even more popular among teenagers and it is used as a
mean of accessibility, micro-coordination, security and emancipation. Mobile
phones provide a direct communicative channel between teenagers and peer
groups, parents and children; therefore, the device enhances social interactions
and bonding with peers and family. In order to explore the impact of mobile
adoption on teenagers' social relationships, a random sample of students aged
12-18 years old has been drawn from a semi-urban area of Greece. The results
from Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses highlight the

significant impact of mobile phones on teenagers' socialization processes.

Teenagers use the computer more than young children or parents. Although
playing specific computer games has immediate positive effects on iconic and
attentional skills used by the game, there is still need for more research to
determine if long-term computer and internet use (both game and nongame) can
lead to long-term improvements in cognitive skills and academic achievement.
While much of the time on computers is spent alone, regulated computer use
does not have negative effects on teen’s social skills and activities.On the
contrary, e-mail and the internet may help maintain interpersonal communication
and sustain social relationships. It has been proved beyond doubt that there is a
relation between violent games and teen’s aggression. Although further research
is still needed, preliminary surveys indicate that the increasing dominance of
simulated worlds (vs. real world experiences) in teen’s daily experiences has an
impact on their developing identities and sense of reality. (Psychological Effects

It was evident that social media played a major role on behavior change of the
respondents. The youths mostly used social media for communicating between
their friends and families. The fact that social media is part of them especially
having been born in this era of emerging technology, most felt that they could not

do without it. They depended on it for various positive things such as research
and contacts with old friends and getting on the loop of what was happening
either in their circles, nationally or internationally. (Impacts of Social Media

Synthesis
The summarization of the given samples of related studies and literatures, this
revealed that the effect of technology on teenagers varies person to person.
Basically, it is up to the point of view of the person how they would interpret
technology as, a positive or a negative factor. The half of the given related
studies and literatures stated positive components that technology can provide to
teenagers’ social lives. According to them, technology can help teenagers
improve their social interaction with others using online activities and platforms,
like social medias. On the other hand, half of the related studies and literatures
stated that technology is undoubtedly useful, but it could lead adolescents into
negatively isolating themselves from their community. They could possibly suffer

mental illnesses, like depression and anxiety, from too much usage of digital
technology.
Chapter 3
Research Design
This study uses descriptive research design, a research method which aims
to accurately describe the characteristic and behavior of a subject. The study
focuses on finding out how technology affects the social life of a teenager, and
how other factors could also contribute in the disconnection of adolescents from
the society. The use of descriptive research method is important for this study as
it can use variety of methods to investigate other more variables that could
potentially affect the outcome of the study.

Respondents
The respondents of the study are 50 teenagers from the high school
department of Angelicum Immanuel Montessori. They were taken as the
respondents of the study because their generation is the main topic of the
research.

Data Gathering Instrument
The research instrument that was used to gather the necessary data for this
study is a questionnaire. It includes a total of 20 questions that are in relation with
the study’s statements of the problem.

Data Gathering Procedure
The data was gathered using a questionnaire but instead of using physical
materials to conduct the survey, it was instead done using an online tool called
Google Forms, a survey administration software. The researcher chose to use
this method because conducting actual survey in today’s time is not possible. It is
also more convenient for the researcher and the respondents to answer through
an online questionnaire. Fifty teenagers of Angelicum Immanuel Montessori were
asked to answer the questions honestly and appropriately.
