QUARTER 2 – MODULE 2
Install Operating System and Drivers
for Peripheral / Devices
I. INTRODUCTION

This module covers the outcomes required in installing and configuring desktop and
workstation computers systems. It consists competencies to assemble computer hardware,
install operating system and drivers for peripherals / devices, and install application software
as well as to conduct testing and documentation.
There are many reasons why there is a need to boot a PC from a bootable CD or DVD.
Most users with an intermediate level of PC experience are familiar with having to start their
machine up from a Windows setup CD or DVD to install a clean copy of Windows. Many
recovery programs and utilities, such as our own Easy Recovery Essentials for Windows, also
come in the form of a bootable CD. These products are more than just repair tools — the CDs
must ship with their own operating system1 and work from within it to repair your PC.

II. MODULE CONTENTS

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Bootable Drive – the process of starting a computer process through a disc or storage
devices.
CD/ DVD (Compact Disc / Digital Versatile Disc) - Both are high definition as storage
devices.
Computer Hardware – Physical Electronic components that makes up a computer system.
HDD (Hard Disk Drive) – Primary memory of the computer.
Installation CD (Compact Disc)– A installation compact disc that includes new software with
drivers and manuals. Additionally, may include diagnostic tools and trials software.
NTFS (New Technology File System) - is a process that the Windows NT
operating system uses for storing, organizing, and finding files on a hard disk efficiently.
PC (Personal Computer)
USBFD (Universal Serial Bus Flash Drive)
WiFi (Wireless Fidelity)
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CD and DVD
A DVD can store over two hours of video on one layer of the disc. In comparison to the
74 minutes of data that a CD can hold, this capacity marks a vast improvement.
DVD (digital video disc) is a technology based on optical data storage similar to
compact disc (CD). Optical data storage is a method of storing digital information (1's and 0's)
by using light to read the information. Analog information is converted into digital information,
which is then encoded onto the disc from the inside edge out. Digital data are encoded by
means of pits on the recording layer of the disc. The encoding is done using a technique
referred to as EFM, eight-to-fourteen modulation, in CDs and EFMPlus, eight-to-sixteen
modulation, in DVDs.

1
The pits and the separations between pits, called lands, vary in length to represent the
digital information stored in the disc. The pits are arranged in a track that forms a spiral pattern
on the recording layer of the disc. The disc revolves in a circular motion inside the player, while
an optical head laser slowly moves outward and remains focused on the pits. The laser beam
is reflected back to a detector when it hits the lands, and it is scattered away from the detector
by the pits. The transition between a pit and a land corresponds to a "1" in the digital bit stream.
That said, DVDs and CDs are not impervious. Because data is stored in a spiral
fashion, users should avoid wiping the disc in a circular motion; when cleaning a disc, wipe
from the inside radially out to the edge. Compared to video tapes, the longevity and easier
storage of DVDs makes them a much more reasonable and user-friendly media.
CREATING A BOOTABLE CD OR DVD
Our knowledgebase contains guides on creating a bootable CD or DVD from an ISO
image using free products like ActiveISO and ImgBurn. The instructions must be followed very
closely, and it is essential that you do not open the ISO file directly — instead, install the
burning software you plan to use (ActiveISO or ImgBurn) and use that application to browse
for and open the ISO file you have downloaded.

There is a separate knowledgebase article dedicated specifically to configuring your
PC to boot from CD or DVD. If you’re having problems getting your PC to boot from the
CD/DVD drive after following those instructions, this page contains an index of troubleshooting
inability to boot from CD/DVD and common solutions.

INSTALLING DEVICE DRIVERS IN ACCORDANCE TO MANUFACTURERS

Devices have changed from being single-function peripherals to complex, multifunction
devices, with a large amount of local storage and the ability to run applications. They have
evolved from a single type of connection, such as USBFD, to multi transport devices that
support USB, Bluetooth, and WiFi.
Many of today's devices are often integrated and sold with services that are delivered
over the Internet, Internet delivery has simplified the delivery mechanism, which means that a
computer's ability to recognize and use devices has expanded to cover all possibilities.
Microsoft has expanded the list of devices and peripherals that are being tested for
compatibility with Windows 8.1.
The device experience in Windows 8.1 is designed on existing connectivity protocols
and driver models to maximize compatibility with existing devices.

2
WINDOWS 8 THAT YOU CAN USE TO MANAGE DEVICES:

• The Devices and Printers control panel gives users a single location to find and
manage all the devices that connect to a Windows 8.1 based computer, and provides
quick access to device status, product information, and key functions, such as Faxing
and scanning. This enhances and simplifies the customer experience with a Windows
8.1 connected device.
• Device Manager is used to view and update hardware settings and driver software for
devices such as internal hard drives, disc drives, sound cards, video or graphics cards,
memory, processors, and other internal computer components.
• Seamless user experiences begin with the ability to effortlessly connect devices.
Additional drivers are retrieved automatically from Windows Update, and when
appropriate, users are given an option to download and install additional applications
for the device. These components all help reduce support calls and increase customer
satisfaction.
DEVICE DRIVERS IN WINDOWS 8.1
A driver is a small software program that the computer uses to communicate with hardware or
devices. It also is specific to an operating system. Without drivers, the hardware that you
connect to the computer does not work properly.
In most cases, drivers are part of windows, or you can locate them by navigating to Windows
Update, and then checking for updates. If Windows does not have the required driver, look for
it on the disc that came with the hardware or device, or on the manufacturer's website.
32-bit and 64-bit Drivers
Windows 8.1 is available in 32-bit and 64-bit version. Drivers developed for the 32-bit
versions do not work with the 64-bit versions, and vice versa. You must make sure that you
obtain the appropriate device drivers before you install Windows 8.1.
Driver Signing
The device drivers that are part of Windows 8.1 have a Microsoft digital signature that
indicates whether a particular driver or file has met a certain level of testing, is stable and
reliable, and has not been altered since it was signed digitally. Windows 8.1 checks for driver's
digital signature during installation, and prompts the user if no signature is available.
Note: The signature file is stored as a .cat file in the same location as the driver file.
If you are running Windows 7 on your current PC, then there is no urgency to upgrade
the hardware just to run Windows 8 based. It will depend on client what type of OS to be
installed in his computer and its purpose of installation. Phone software is better performance
in Windows 8 based than Windows 7. Windows 7 user interface is built to just a desktop mode
having the start-menu icon and the task bar. Unlike Windows 8.1, user can switch between a
Desktop mode or tablet mode.

MAKING BOOTABLE CD/DVD IN ANY VERSION OF OS

Once you have the bootable USB drive, then there are several ways to make it into an install
drive for those machines that don't have a CD/DVD - Optical drive available. You can either
do the whole process manually or you can download one of a number of different third-party
tools that automate the whole process.
HOW TO USE DISKPART AND WINDOWS EXPLORER TO CREATE AND COPY
THE FILES

1. Get a large enough USBFD Drive.

2. Make sure it is empty. You will be formatting it as part of the install process.
3. Plug the USBFD drive into a USB port on your computer.
4. Make a note of the drive letter.
5. Go to the start menu and open a command prompt in accessories as
an Administrator.
6. You can do this by right-clicking on the command prompt icon and choosing Run As
Administrator.
7. We're going to run through a series of commands using the DiskPart utility.
8. Type DISKPART and press the ENTER key.
9. In DISKPART we need to identify which Disk is the USBFD drive.
10. Your internal hard disk is always assigned the first disk number which is 0.
11. If there are any additional internal disks they will be assigned the following numbers 1,
2 etc.
12. For this example, there will be only 1 internal HDD and the USB drive is going to be
assigned the number Disk1.
13. To find out type LIST DISK and press the ENTER key. The List Disk command shows
each of the assigned disks.
14. Now we are going to run a series of commands. Each command is entered and run
until it has completed before putting in the next command. I've listed the commands in
the order they should be entered.
15. Type Select Disk 1 and then Press the ENTER key.
16. Type Clean and then Press the ENTER key.
17. Type Create Partition Primary and then Press the ENTER key.

4
18. Type Select Partition 1 and then Press the ENTER key.
19. Type Active and then Press the ENTER key.
20. Type Format FS=NTFS and then Press the ENTER key.
21. Type Assign and then Press the ENTER key.
22. Type EXIT and then Press the ENTER key.
23. At this point, you need to put the DVD of whatever it is you want to install into your
DVD drive. In command prompt type the following commands for a windows install.
24. Type D: cd boot and then Press the ENTER key. Where D: is the drive letter of the
optical Drive.
25. Type Bootsect.exe /nt60 E: and then Press the ENTER key
Now it's just a case of using Windows Explorer to go to the install DVD and copy ALL of the
files to the USB drive. Once the copy is complete you have a USB drive that is ready to install
operating systems
