Part 1: Short answer questions
Read the following questions carefully and complete your answer in the space provided
below each question. Use the word limit as an indication of the detail required in your
answer.

Answers will vary and Assessor to use the expert judgement in marking student’s work. An
answer on similar lines should be considered as satisfactory.

Question 1.1
a) Define what the client business domain is and explain why it is important for the
project team when trying to understand the business needs? (Approx. 50-75 words)

Business Domain refers to the type and overall nature of the business (e.g. Healthcare, Aviation,
Finance, Military, Retail, etc). IT identifies what the business systems does more than how the
business systems work.

The business domain forms a basis for requirements and acceptance criteria for the system.

b) List four (4) questions you might ask to define a client’s business domain.
(Approx. 30-50 words)

To define the business domain, it is important to ask high-level questions like:

 Who is the customer?

 What is the product?
 How is the product sold? (online, phone, in-person sales)
 What is the cost structure of the product? (subscription, pay-per-unit, etc)
 Where does the money go?
 How do we fulfil or distribute the product?
 How do we produce or service the product?
 How do we support the customer?
 How do we market the product?
 What partners do we work with to do business? How do we manage these relationships?
 What information does the organization manage? Who is responsible for creating, updating,
and retiring information? What systems are used to manage the information?

c) Explain why you have chosen these questions. (Approx. 50-75 words)

Resource ID: TBS_19_004_ICTICT509_MG_Kn_2of2
Questions should be chosen to illicit information about what the business is about or how it works
etc. Professional judgement can be used to assess student’s answer.

Question 1.2
a) Explain the role of stakeholders in the information gathering process.
(Approx. 75-100 words)

Stakeholders provide the actual information required for the project. They are the sources of
current information about how the business is currently working.

b) When gathering information how much involvement should there be with the
stakeholders? Explain your answer. (Approx. 100-150 words)

Stakeholders for any business can range from customer, to government, professional bodies
(external stakeholders) to business units within the business (internal stakeholders). Degree of
involvement of the stakeholders is directly dependent on their role. Difference in the type of
stakeholder will essentially mean differing requirements from other stakeholders. Consider a
website development project. Embedded payment options is going to be a requirement for the
customer and finance department of the business. It is not a Human Resources department
requirement. HR may have an embedded staff induction kit as a requirement, which is not a
requirement for finance department or the customer. It is important to clearly understand these
different requirements of the stakeholders. A wide range of problems and a large number of
projects failing, can be avoided or reduced by having a better understanding of the varying
requirements of different stakeholders.
