1. Think about the fishmonger’s jobs. They work in a damp, sometimes cold, sometimes hot open
air market, handling ice cold fish 12 hours a day. What effect might these conditions have on
their attitudes?

What do the fishmongers have that we would like our workplace?

The fishmongers have a playful attitude at their workplace which a corporate employee doesn’t
have. They also have good interpersonal relationship among themselves so it doesn’t feel like they
are taking orders from someone. They are doing the work to make themselves satisfied. The
fishmongers also have taken collective personal responsibility for improving their work conditions
and this collectiveness is also not present at a corporate office.

Which of these things are internal (attitudes) rather than external (physical environment)?

Strong interpersonal relationship is an internal aspect among these.

The fishmongers take pride in what they do, and they’re doing more than selling fish. Each one
of them has committed to being “World famous”. It isn’t about entertaining the customers. It’s
about creating a positive experience for every person who walks by.

If we had the same commitment, what would that look like?

The same enthusiasm and commitment would not only grow us but also our organization but for this
to happen each and every person of the organization will have to align their thoughts in one direction
to serve the customer in best possible way.

What is our commitment?

Our commitment is usually limited to our given roles and responsibilities as specified in our job
description.
”Anybody can do this. You don’t have to throw fish. You just have to have the energy; you have
to have the commitment.”-Dick

Can anybody do this?

No, everyone cannot do this until and unless they have the required energetic work
environment that would support and motivate them to be energetic.

Why would someone think it’s impossible to do this? What might make it “impossible” in
our organization? How many of these reasons are really limits we are placing on ourselves?

If the environment around you doesn’t have energetic people the one person alone being
energetic might not be of much help

What do the fishmongers have that we don’t have? Anything?

Fishmongers have an enthusiasm and love towards their work which we don’t have. This
is the reason why they are able to work continuously for a 14 hour shift.

What things do we have in common with them?

Our communication skills as managers and marketers is comparable to them or even better than
them.
“It doesn’t have anything to do with the fish itself.” Justin

If it isn’t about the fish, what is it about?

It is all about the attitude towards the work you are doing because our attitude affects everyone in
contact with us. Hence the success of an organisation narrows down to positive attitude of its
employees.

What is our organization, your job fundamentally about? Is that purpose deeper than
the product or service we provide?

“People are having fun and they’re also, by the way, buying our fish.” -Tim

What benefits might you experience if you embraced the FISH! Principles?

Embracing fish philosophy would immediately improve the quality of our lives. It would also help
us to channel our energies in the right direction. Secondly it would make us love our work which
would reduce stress related to work.

How could our organization benefit if we embraced FISH! (Short term and long term)?

In a client facing role embracing fish would make the customers feel special and as a result would
increase sales too. Embracing fish philosophy would also increase employee productivity as work
would be viewed as fun task.

6. “The moment you try to imitate us you’re struck…”-J.P.

Why might we be tempted to imitate Pike Place fish?

Due to transformation from a normal fish market in seattle to a world famous fish market due to its
unique way of selling fish one might try to imitate the pike place fish in order to increase profits of an
organisation in similar way.

What is the downside of imitating others?

The major downside of imitating would be lack of internal motivation and consequently lack of attitude to do the
task hence the results might not be as expected.

What are we supposed to do with FISH! If it isn’t imitation?

We have to embrace the philosophy and go beyond our call of duty in order to succeed.
