REFLECTION PAPER

This reflection paper is about the importance of mindset in policing that is explained and
discussed by Mr. Chip Huth. In his discussion, he proved that mindset is the key for everything. I
mean he just wanted us to understand that we must know how to adapt in any kind of situations
and new environment that we are facing, such as solving different kinds of problems that is
concerning by the community. As a future law enforcement officer, I already imagine how hard
to be a public servant is. We can face many difficulties, problems and complains from public
because of our way of policing. But, if we change our mindset, rather than mandating new
behaviors, deploying new technologies or implementing new policies, we can actually make a
better change in our way of policing. We can also not forget to consider the public request and
complains because they are the one who can see how we serve the public and they are the one
who knows where the policing goes wrong. With the discussion of Mr. Huth, I can also see his
determination and perseverance to make him and his team to be an effective public servants.
Imagine that they are from the most complained team to no complaints at all.
As a future law enforcement officer, Mr. Huth thought us to never give up, even the
situation is hard, he also thought us to learn how to adapt in any kind of situations we are facing
and also he thought us on how to be productive in our work as a law enforcer. And just what I’ve
said earlier, changing our mindset is the key because no matter how we implement the rules and
laws, if we don’t handle it properly, if we don’t change our mindset, if we can’t able to adapt in
different situations, I can say that the policing will not be effective. I just want to mention my
most favorite part in the discussion of Mr. Huth, when he shares how they handle their problem
about aggressive dogs during their operations that his team shoots aggressive dogs in order for
them to avoid attacks from these aggressive dogs. Because his team shoots aggressive dogs, the
dogs will definitely die and the owners complaining about this issue. A lot of member of the
community are pet owners and it makes them angry and sad at the same time, when they lost
their beloved pets. They receive a lot of complains. So in order to fix this kind of complain, Mr.
Huth decided to have a dog expert in their team, to learn their jobs and to learn about the dog
behavior so they can handle aggressive dogs during their operations. With this, it resulted in an
80 percent reduction in dogs being shot during their operations.
All of the lessons I learned in the discussion of Mr. Huth is a great knowledge to have
because I can use it as a future law enforcement officer.
