ACOUSTICS ASSIGNMENT II
B17ARB27
INTRODUCTION
The Calvary Convention Centre (CCC) is a distinctive convention Centre that is
dedicated to the pursuit of holistic activities which include the hosting of international
and local conventions, services, seminars and creative arts productions, the provision
of educational, spiritual and vocational development for the Malaysian public.

o The 6-storey complex designed by T.R Hamzah

& Yeang Sdn Bhd houses a variety of facilities
including an auditorium, theaters and a multi-
purpose banquet hall etc.
o Located on a 4.9 acre piece of land in Bukit
Jalil, the CCC occupies a total built up area of
about 600,000 sq. ft.
o The massive 5,000 seat auditorium is fan-
shaped, suitable for great audience capacities.
o The auditorium was designed to be a single-
tiered floor allowing unobstructed circulation
from the back of the hall to the stage in front. It
has multiple features that allow the auditorium
to be modified to suit different functions and
events.
ACOUSTICS Acoustical conditions in an enclosed space is achieved when there is clarity of sound
in every part of the occupied space. In CCC, this is achieved through appropriate
material selection, proper shaping and massing of auditorium, volume, levelling of
stages and seats, seating arrangements, layout of boundary surface etc.

In this presentation addresses the material usage and it properties which enhance
acoustical quality in CCC.
MATERIALS A wide range of materials is implemented in the auditorium to achieve desired
acoustic quality. Materials can be mainly classified into:
o Absorbent
o Reflector

Timber flooring is used on stage to reduce noise transmission tolerable levels.
An acoustic layer is laid under timber veneer flooring to absorb sound waves.

outstanding sound absorber which serves as an acoustical aid, as well as a
floor cover. A rubber underlay further improves absorption

Rockwood foam The surface of the wall paneling is the fabric, followed by the sponge that
functions as a porous material that absorbs high frequency sounds. The wall
A.C, 0.85 in 500Hz is finished with plywood and Rockwool, which is useful in absorbing the low
frequency sound waves that hit the wall.
MATERIALS Gypsum board ceiling Ceiling panels are made of gypsum board as their smooth surfaces help in

strengthens the overall sound quality.

Upholstered tip-up theatre Timber upholstered chairs not only provide viewers with comfort, it is also an
seat excellent sound absorbent, which helps reduce the overall reverberation time
in the auditorium. additional sound control is also present in the form of the
padded seats.

INFERENCE
Reflectors are provided as Ceiling material so that it reflect sound effectively back
to the audience. And sound absorbent materials are used in the rest of the
auditorium to minimise the resultant reflected sound.
zoning

The gallery can be divided into 3 levels (A,B,C).

Direct sound from the source and reflected sound
from ceiling reaches without creating echo. Zone A
would be receiving sound at higher rate as we can
see.
OTHER TECHNIQUES

External noises from the car

parking beneath the auditorium is
controlled by a thick layer of
insulation material.

Internal noises mainly from

conventional air conditioning
system is solved by inverting it. Air
conditioning system with
transmitting cool air upwards rather
than downwards in 2/3rd of the
space reduces noise.
OTHER TECHNIQUES The Shape is Horseshoe-type hall with a The volume depends upon use of auditorium. Larger

Levelling of stages and seats is done which

allows unobstructed flow of sound waves.

of sound
Layout of boundary surface is a combination of
