Group Assignment of optics fiber communication

1) Describe the Fiber Losses with in necessary equation and Example

2) A 1.3m digital receiver is operating at 100 Mb/s and has an effective noise
bandwidth of 60 MHz. The p-i-n photodiode has negligible dark current and 90%
quantum efficiency. The load resistance is 100 Q. and the amplifier noise figure is
3 dB. Calculate the receiver sensitivity corresponding to a BER of 10 -9. How much
does it change if the receiver is designed to operate reliably up to a BER of 10 -12?

3) Consider a quantum-noise-limited analog optical fiber system that uses a pin

photodiode with a responsivity of 0.85 at 1310 nm. Assume the system uses a
modulation index of 0.6 and operates in a 40-MHz bandwidth. If we neglect
detector dark current, what is the signal-to-noise ratio when the incident optical
power at the receiver is -15 dBm?

4) Briefly outline the general requirements for a source in optical fiber

communications. Discuss the areas in which the injection laser fulfills these
requirements, and comment on any drawbacks of using this device as an optical
fiber communication source.

5) An APD has a quantum efficiency of 45% at 0.85 μm. When illuminated with
radiation of this wavelength it produces an output photocurrent of 10 μA after
avalanche gain with a multiplication factor of 250. Calculate the received optical
power to the device. How many photons per second does this correspond to?

6) A continuous 40-km-long optical fiber link has a loss of 0.4 dB/km.

(a) What is the minimum optical power level that must be launched into the fiber to
maintain an optical power level of 2.0 mW at the receiving end?
(b) What is the required input power if the fiber has a loss of 0.6 dB/km?

Remark Q no 6 is only for who are loss a quiz (it work individually)
