1.0 INTRODUCTION
1
Mobile phones and smartphones are both used with the primary function of being
able to make and receive phone calls and send and receive text messages, but the
smartphone has certain qualities that distinguish it from any usual mobile phones.
Smartphones have additional features such as online gaming, online video watching,
route tracking, GPS system and several other added features, which differentiate it
from other usual mobile phones and, are more preferred than mobile phones.
There are different kinds of smartphones in the market, which are produced
by different mobile manufacturers such as the Android which is produced and sold by
Google and the iPhone, which is produced and sold by Apple Inc. A very huge
percentage of the population has shifted towards smartphones from their usual
mobile phones. The PEW research center has reported that in the US alone over
35% of the adult population is currently using smartphones (Smith 1). The research
center further figured out that there are various benefits that can be obtained through
smartphones, and these benefits are the primary reason for the high demand of
smartphones in the US. Smartphones are not limited to the access of adults, they are
even owned and used by several teenagers and the younger generation.

2.0 BENEFITS OF MOBILE PHONE

2.3 SMARTPHONE CAN BE THE E-LIBRARY
The time is gone when you had to carry really hefty books with you in order to
read them. You needed to get them issued from the library or purchase it from
a bookstore. Then you required a proper place to keep them and you had to
take a good care of them so they do not get torn off.
Smartphones can be loaded with many apps which are beneficial for
language skills and vocabulary. I can load my phone with a dictionary and a
thesaurus. Wherever I go, I will have a dictionary in my pocket.
New words can hit me anywhere I go. I may come across hoardings,
signboards, advertisements, notices which fill your mind with many new
words. I can always look for them in my dictionary. If we do not want to install
a dictionary we can always Google the new words. We also can download a
vocabulary app which will give us new words and phrases to learn.

2.5 SHARING INFORMATION ABOUT LESSONS
Sharing information about lessons or homework can also be done more easily
with the availability of mobile phones. Through mobile phones, we can
socialize with anyone, regardless of place, time and age. With information
channeled for free via ‘whatsapp’, it is good to use this channel for more
beneficial things.

3.0 NEGATIVE IMPACT
Unfortunately, despite the benefits of that, mobile phones also can have a negative
impact on its users.
Not only that, there are also students who have to bear expensive
phone bills because they often call and chat with friends despite knowing the
payment rate. In fact, they should measure the clothes on their own bodies
and not be knocked down later. Malay saying goes, remember before
touched, save before running out. Therefore, students should reduce the use
of mobile phones in order to avoid wastage.
Following the above description, the use of mobile phones can also affect the
health of students. In an article published in the Metro Daily published on April
29, 2015 stated that among the adverse effects of diseases that can affect the
health of students if the habit of obsession with this technology is continued
without limits is Insomnia where the use of smartphones such as video
games, surfing the Internet and so on can indirectly affect sleep quality.
Addiction to social media for example will lead to nightmares and eventually
cause sleep deprivation and fatigue. Too much reliance on technology will
cause short-term memory to be less effective and can cause students to lose
their memory.

3.3 LEARN ABOUT DIFFERENT THINGS
Students use smartphones to search for places and events and learn about
different things. The problem associated with informal learning is that these
students and especially the youth end up browsing for information that is not
good for their age. They end up surfing the web through their smartphones to
learn about sex and pornography, and they even stalk other individuals, which
leads to violation of the right of privacy of others
4.0 CONCLUSION
Smartphones are highly popular among individuals of different ages such as adults
as well as teenagers. These devices are so popular due to the various advantages
offered by these devices to the younger and the adult generation. On the other hand,
there are disadvantages associated with smartphones that come along with these
advantages. This does not mean that smartphone use should be stopped as this
would lead to giving up the benefits offered by smartphones.
