Chapter I : THE PROBLEM AND ITS STUDY
Introduction
Mobile Phone are often small mechanical or electronic device with a practical use
but often thought of as a novelty. As the world grows into technologically
sophisticated, there is a great demand for the hottest electronic gadgets. People
always use Mobile phone or Cell phone. Cell phones support a wide variety of the
service such as, text message, multimedia messaging, email, internet access,
Bluetooth, games, photography and calendaring among other services.

(2013)stressed that cell phone is a very important tool for study as most of the
respondents used their phones for study purposes. Cell phones are increasingly one
of the high use of interactive, multi user functions which can at times be disruptive or
beneficial during study. In essence, the study revealed that cell phones are beneficial
for learning but learners have a tendency to abuse them. The presence of all cell
phone is undeniably convenient, helpful tools for study. However, it can be a hurtful
source of distraction depending on the attitude and use pattern of the student.

Similarly in 2015 emphasized that students are always busy sending and
receiving messages while studying. As a result they got lower score in the test and
were less effective at tasks such as note taking. This generation of “voracious
texters” might be affected by so many online distractions. When students did not use
mobiles, they were better at being able to recall information. With the exam season
under way, there are family arguments about whether teenagers really can learn at
the same time as using several online games but we know that mobile phone is not
good to our health.
Addiction to Mobile Phone and Services
Recently, evert other day information technology or IT inverts mobile phones
are attracting the attention of the present generation. As a vulnerable group, the
youth becomes the largest consumer of such devices and services, which in turn
makes addicted to them at some point of time. Addiction is the continued repetition of
a behavior or an activity independent upon the adverse or negative consequences of
the same or it can be a neurological impairments which leads to such behaviors
( American Society for Addiction Medicine, 2012 ). There is no such limitation of the
term addiction to some specific behavior such as drug addiction, food addiction etc.
Psychological control over substances and behavior, preoccupation with the subject
and the continuation of activities despite consequences are generally the symptoms
of addiction. Actually the term addiction means the high degree of likeness towards a
particular thing or subject. So if somebody is addicted towards something then he
loses control over his own mind and faces difficulties to get rid of the claws of that
object. Most of the teens today spend too much their time with faces buried in
technological gadgets.

Mental Health
The concept menta health comes from the corresponding concept of
mental hygiene. The term “mental hygiene” had been suggested to Clifford Beers by
Adolf Meyer and gained the popularity by the creation of the National Commission of
Mental Hygiene in 1919. Latter the International Committee on Mental Health. Mental
Health is not just the absence of mental illness. It is define as a state of well-being in
which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal
stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to male contribution to
his or her community (WHO, 1950). Mental health is about how we feel about
ourselves, how we feel about others, and how we are able to meet the demands of
life. Mental illness refers to kind of general mental health problems we can
experience in certain stressful circumstances. For Example work pressure can cause
us to have a poor concentration, mood swings and sleep disturbance.
Lifestyle
Another aspect on which the technology gadgets or any mobile phone
addiction has effect is the lifestyle of an individual. As in case of addiction to mobile
phone time and choices are the concerned factors, the lifestyle is necessarily by the
same. Lifestyle is nothing but the way of life of an individual or a group of individuals
or the society as a whole. Somebody’s attitudes, values, world views etc. are
reflected by his/her lifestyle. So lifestyle means making some sense of the self and
creating some cultural symbols which will reflect the identity of a person. All the
aspect of lifestyle may not be voluntary in nature because one is associated with the
society and surrounding plays an important role in shaping the choices of an
individual’s lifestyle.
Mobile Phone Used by the Present Generation

Mobile/cell phone
Mobile phone or cell phone is a device that can make and receive
telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographical area.
Beside telephony it can also provide a variety of other services like text messaging,
playing music, e-mail, internet access, infrared, Bluetooth, business application,
gaming and photography etc. It was first introduced in 1973 and in 1983 the first
mobile phone was commercially available. From 1990 to 2011, the number of world-
wide phone users grew from 12.4 million to over 6 billion, covering about 87% of the
global population.
Smart phone
A smart phone, or smart phone, is a type of mobile phone built on a mobile
operating system with more advanced computing capability and connectivity than a
feature phone. In early 2013 worldwide sales of smart phone exceeded those of
feature phones. As of July 18,2013. 90 percent of global handset sales are attributed
to the purchase of I-phone and Android smart phones (The Guardian, 22 Dec, 2013).

Statement of the Problem

This study is about the impact of mobile phones to student learning ability of
ABIS Grade 10 students. In order to answer positively the problem of this study,
following questions are made:

1. What are the people always do in manual study if they always using mobile
phone?
2. What are the people study habits or let just say pupils study habits?
3. Why people always playing mobile phone?

People always think that things are more important because they always think
that they can make them happy like playing online games on gadgets. And
sometimes people always forgot that too much using gadgets. They think that
gadget is good because they are happy if they use gadgets and sometimes they
forgot to study or like they forgot the manual studies like reading some books or
making an artwork just like that and because they using gadgets their eyes was
now blurred.

Hypothesis

:They have a differentiate manual study to always playing mobile phone.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study is significant to school heads, parents, teachers, students
and other people:

School heads. This is beneficial for them to impose disciplinary action thru
to our parents and second that teachers because students who are addicted to
electronic gadgets or mobile phone especially whose grades and school
attendance are greatly affected once students is addicted to it. According to
Walcott (2013), each school is expected to promote positive school culture and
climate that provides students with a supportive environment.
This study is important because it would help teachers examine whether
the use of mobile phone has negative implication on students’ performance on
exam and study habits.

Parents. Its important to have a better life but you need to finish and pass
your grades to have a better or successful grades but I know that students is
more focusing in gadgets that’s why we parents need to guide our children.

Students. This is study is important to remain our grades because its our
responsibilities while using their favorite gadgets because many academics and
researchers believes that excessive use of the internet and other sophisticated
gadgets have the potential to become an addiction.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The students is always busy in mobile phone because they love it and
sometimes they forgot to read a book sometimes prioritize the phone or gadgets
that’s why students forgot there relationship to manual study and of course the
relationship in their Teachers and Parents.

Definition of Terms

Cellphone or mobile phone. This is a device that can make and receive
telephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area.
Beside telephone it can also provide a variety of the other services like a
messaging, playing music, email, internet access, infrared, Bluetooth, business
applications, gaming, and photography etc.

Gadgets. This is small technological object that has a particular

function, but is often thought of as a novelty.
Chapter II: REVIEW OF LITERATION
There are sexual studies which show the positive impact of the Mobile
Phone. Others studies reveal the negative impacts of these mobile phone. Some
of the studies take both the positive and negative impacts of these technologies
into consideration and some others show approach regarding the use of the tech-
mobile phones. Somehow we already use the tech-gadgets that’s why we
addicted to gadgets we need to balance the positive and negative impacts into
the mobile phone.

Positive Impacts of Mobile Phone

When it comes to the positive impacts of cell phone ownership, fully two-thirds
(65%) of cell owners say that mobile phones have made it “a lot” easier to stay in
touch with the people they care about, while just 6% say that their phone has not
improved their connections with friends and family at all. Roughly half of cell
owners say that their phone has made it at least somewhat easier to plan and
schedule their daily routine, and to be productive while doing things like sitting in
traffic or waiting in line. In fact the use of the mobile phones by the presenting
generation has a positive impact on IT markets and therefore it is beneficial for
the economy. Tech-devices and gaming may have a positive effects on
investigating skills, strategic thinking and creativity potential if the individuals.
These tech-devices and services are better sources for learning for the youth and
these are the source of fun and entertainment which help them distract from daily
stresses of life. The digital behavior of the youth makes them sit at one place for
a long period of time and the eye, hand and mental coordination is maintained
during that period. To cross the levels step by steps in the games may improve
the engineering skills among the youth and it may also help in building up good
attitudes of moving ahead in life in spite of any obstacles, following studies
support the positive effects of the gadgets into our life.

Internet continues to grow beyond our belief. About 32.7% of the world’s
population has access to the social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter,
Linked-In, YouTube, Flicker, Blogs Wikis, and many more which let people of all
ages rapidly share their interest of the moments with others everywhere. So the
interconnections through the world is growing rapidly due to internet use.
When students use laptops and other tech-device by the instructor’s advice
they are connected to course learning objectives. The classroom learning and
engagement of the young students can be impacted positively by the use of
these digital devices.

Individual who are engaged in high level of technical activities through the
digital devices are better in performing cognitive tasks. The effective use of the
gadgets may have positive impacts on cognitive thinking and also makes them
master multitasking.

In the medical set up the use of digital devices may help to a great
extent. Easy storage, searching and sharing of patients information through the
computers and accessibility of knowledge regarding recent health related
inventions through internet, have made the work of the medicos easier.

Negative Impacts of Technology (mobile phones)

Although the use of mobile phone has many positive impacts, they are short
lived. In long run it has negative impacts on the individuals. The digital activities
make the youth strong in technical skills but make them weak in real life practical
skills. It takes the young mass away from the reality helping them to live in their
imaginary world. Due to the time spent on the device the youth are refrained from
some outdoor activities with friends and family. The indulgence in violent games
may create more violence in their mind. The more they use the gadgets, the
more they are crazy about it which distract them from study. During the time of
playing games when they can’t achieve the set target, it may raise their anxious
level higher. After all addiction to the devices may develop unhealthy lifestyle,
poor time management and poor eating habits among the youth. Following
studies highlight some of the negative effects of the technology devices and their
services.

Mobile Phones has Both Positive and Negative Impacts

Some studies focus on positive and negative consequences of use of

mobile phone and provided a balanced approach regarding the use of the same.
Mobile phone is somehow cyber bullying that is example of negative the positive
means is student use gadget in positive like research but it takes how many days
you have an illness because you use it too much or like depression. Now we
understand use of any technology gadgets has an effect on the mental health
and the lifestyle.

Impact of Mobile Phone on Health and Lifestyle

Now we understand that use of mobile phone and technology has an effect
on the mental health and lifestyle directly or indirectly and the effect may be
positive or negative. When the use takes the form into addiction then the impact
may be negative upon both. Sometime we know that using so much mobile
phones is bad because you make an bad lifestyle like not eating on time.

Statement of the Problem

People always think that things are more important because they always
think that it can make them more happy like playing online games in mobile
phone. And sometimes people always forgot that too much using mobile phone.
They think that mobile phone is good because they happy if they using mobile
phone and sometimes they forgot to study or like they forgot the manual studies
like reading some books or making an artwork just like that and because they
using mobile phone their eyes was now blurred. And sometimes students
become lazy because of tiredness and sleepy because of the gadgets.

Objectives of the Study

Following are the three specific objectives of this study.

1. To examine the time spent by the youth with their mobile phone.
2. To examine the intentions behind use of mobile phone.
3. To study the impacts of the addictive use of the mobile phone on mental
health and lifestyle.
Chapter 3

Research Methodology

This chapter presents the research design that the researchers have chosen, the
population size, the data and some gathered information about the respondents.

Research Design

The researchers used descriptive method in conducting this study because

Descriptive research is used to describe characteristics of a population or phenomenon
being studied. It does not answer questions about how/when/why the characteristics
occurred. It is also used because the researchers used to do a survey that is one of the
characteristics of descriptive research.

Population and Sample Size

The population and sample size is taken from the selected Grade level 10 students
derived as respondents from Andres Bonifacio Integrated School.

We have taken 22 students-respondents from Grade 10

Table 1

Population and Sample Size

Grade Level Population Sample Size

Grade 10 40 22
Sampling Technique Used

We simplify the sample size by choosing randomly 2 students derived as

respondents per section and we also given those who voluntarily want to answer the
survey. So there's a total of 22 students-respondents were selected.

Description of Respondents

There are 10 grade levels in Andres Bonifacio Integrated School.

Instrumentation

The researchers are the one who made the questionnaire and think of the questions
carefully. It was used as the primary data gathering instrument with focus "Impact of
Mobile Phone / Gadget in selected students of Andres Bonifacio Integrated School S.Y.
2022-2023".

The instrument underwent content validation by a teacher in exchange of the principal.

Then the instrument was also validated by the One teachers of Andres Bonifacio
Integrated School as part of this study. They were not included as actual respondents,
they were only used to validate the procedure, questionnaire and the contents if it is
right or needed to be changed.

Data Gathering Procedure

All of the data pertaining to the topic of the study is all conducted and made by the
researchers. The primary data is the survey's questionnaire that is filled up by students
derived as respondents of Andres Bonifacio Integrated School. The secondary data is
from the researcher's researched in the internet.
