EPGDM – Term 3
Total marks – 40

1. Prepare the service blueprint of an order processing system referring to your recent visit to
Pizza hut.
2. The production line of product X is described below. 504 units of product X must be produced
daily with production time being 7 hours per day. Design a line that minimized the number of
workstations based on the cycle time and the precedence of the tasks.
Task Task Time (Seconds) Immediate predecessor
A 45 -
B 11 A
C 9 B
D 50 -
E 26 D
F 11 E
G 12 C
H 10 C
I 9 F, G, H
J 10 I
a. Draw a precedence diagram
b. Calculate cycle time.
c. Calculate the minimum number of workstations.
d. Balance the assembly line using maximum number of followers, in case of a tie
use highest positional weight.
e. Calculate Efficiency of the line.
f. Calculate idle time in seconds.

3. The company wants to implement the new project. The following are the activities required to
complete the project, the precedence relationship of the activities and the activity estimates (in
weeks) also given as below.

Activity Precedence
Optimistic Most likely Pessimistic
Code Requirement
A - 5 8 17
C A 3 12 15
D C 4 7 10
B A 5 8 23
E - 1 1 1
F E 1 4 13
I B,D 3 6 9
M F,I 1 2.5 7
G - 1 1 1
H G 2 2 2
K H 5 8 11

Draw the network diagram; determine the earliest and latest activity times, the expected time
of completion, standard deviation, and the probability that the project will be completed in 40
weeks or less.

4. A manager is attempting to put together an aggregate plan for the coming nine months. She has
obtained a forecast of expected demand for the planning horizon. The department has 20 full
time employees each of whom produces 10 units of output per period at a cost of $6 per unit.
Beginning inventory of period 1 is zero. Inventory carrying cost is $5 per unit per period and
backlog cost is $10 per unit per period.

Period 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
Forecast 190 230 260 280 210 170 160 260 180

Determine the total cost of the plan, including production, inventory and backorder costs.

5. A manager has the option of purchasing one, two, or three machines. Fixed costs and potential
volumes are as follows:

Variable cost is $10 per unit, and revenue is $40 per unit.
a) Determine the break-even point for each range.
b) If projected annual demand is between 580 and 660 units, how many machines should
the manager purchase?

6. Print-for-All is a family-owned print shop that has grown from a three-press two-color
operation to a full-service facility capable of performing a range of jobs from simple copying
to four-color printing, scanning, binding, and more. The company is moving into a new facility
and would like some help arranging its 16 processes into an efficient, yet flexible, layout. A list
of the most popular jobs is shown with processing information. How would you arrange the
processes to ensure an efficient and flexible operation?
7.

8. Operations times of servicing of Washing Machines are given below. The first operation
involves cleaning in Machine 1 and the second operation involves oiling in Machine 2.
a. Determine a sequence that will minimize the total completion time for this
group of jobs, following Johnson’s Rule.
b. Construct a chart of the operations of the jobs at the two work centers and
determine idle time of each line, assuming no other activities are involved.
Processing times (Hrs.) is as follows:

JOBS :A B C D E F
Machine 1 :5 4 8 2 6 12
Machine 2 :5 3 9 7 8 15
