LESSON 5:

ARTIST AND ARTISANS

Art has been an integral part even in the business industry. Dapat makita din natin na art plays a major
role sa mga businesses, bawat employee who produces their work of art sa isang company ay hindi
expendable but rather a avaluable asset, for they are the ones that was able to generate income to a
company through their work of arts. Thus, artists are truly valuable. Ito ang magiging focus ng ating
lesson for today. The importance of the artists and the artisans.

ARTISAN AND THE GUILDS Noong unang panahon uso ang mga tinatawag na guilds. Ang ibig sabihin ng
guilds a “a medieval association of craftsmen and merchants.” Bale parang ito yung mga interest clubs
na jinojoinan niyo nung high school pero ang pinag kaiba nito ay they are doing it for business purpose
and every guild ay may sariling focus, either sa stained glass making, carpentry, blacksmithing etc. and in
order for you to join a guild dapat skilled ka sa field kung saan magaling yung guild nay un.

Halimbawa carpentry yung guild, dapat skilled ka sa ganung field before they take you in. Lahat ng
sumasali dun ay tinatawag na artisan at yung pinaka head nila is called the master mason or master
artisan. What they usually do whenever they take in a new artisan siniskap nilang ishare yung knowledge
nila and to train that artisan into becoming a good one. How do they transfer the knowledge kung
Well, what
they do is they make crude pamphlets, hindi detalyado at hindi maganda, sa kadahilanan na wala silang
pondo for it, hindi naman kasi mayayaman ang guilds noon medieval era eh, mga common folks lang ang
mga yun.

Isa pang way na nagpapasa sila ng knowledge sa mga artisans nila is through explaining it in words, pero
let us admit it, even words has its limits. Hirap kaya mag explain. Dito naman sa atin sa Pilipinas meron
din tayong mga artisans, the guild are not formal at wala talagang guilds. They are only artisans in a
sense that the early Spanish friars commissions these skilled people to paint saints, build churches, make
stone sculpture of angels, or even make wooden crosses to be displayed on the altar or wooden saints,
and these are common folks who have skills in the arts that the friars commission. Aside from the
common folks aside from the common folks the Illustrados were also able to take part in this non formal
guild in the Philippines but they were usually engaged in the field of painting and sculpture. In fact there
was a formal school and not just a guild that was built for them here in the Philippines which is called
Damian Domingo of the Academia de Dibujo

THE ARTIST AND HIS STUDIO

wherein they can display their arts and they were even able to put marks on their art through
autographs.
naka store and where people can view the finished art at ang bottega; kung saan tinuturuan nila ang
mga aspiring and skilled artist at may kanya kanya silang workstation. Dito nila binubuo ang mga art nila.
However on the side of France naman, mas critical na ang art. Meron na silang academies for art and
even art salons. Art salon is a place where artist can not just display their art pero it is also where they
display their art to be critiqued and have a discourse upon it.

OTHER PLAYERS IN THE WORLD OF ART

Art has been very complex ever since its development from the primitive era. Nung una makikita mo
lang tong beautiful art froms na to sa cave to serve as their record of the things around them and their
life, then it became something purely aesthetic, then it was used by guilds as a means of living and from
there on nagkanya kanya na sila and art flourished in the hands of each individual until such that
academies and studios are very common, then come to the present day that each work of art of every
individual is being monetized and appreciated for its beauty at the same time, it has indeed become
very complex, meron nang mga seller, curator, buyer, collector etc. art is not just simply art anymore, it
has its own world already. Tinatawag itong “art world”. Kung saan ang art world comprised ng artist, the
one who makes the art, the setting like galleries and museums which are being taken care of by
Curators, curators are the one who promote the art, develops it and interprets it to the people. Bukod
sa curator meron ding buyer, collector, at dealer and sometimes nag ooverlap yung mga role nila, yung
buyer pwedeng collector din siya or yung dealer pwedeng collector din siya or all three at the same
time. Pero ano ng aba ang pinag kaiba

Bukod sa curator meron ding buyer, collector, at dealer and sometimes nag ooverlap yung mga role nila,
yung buyer pwedeng collector din siya or yung dealer pwedeng collector din siya or all three at the same
time. Basically a buyer is someone who buys art for different
purposes, yung may ari ng gallery pwedeng buyer din yun, and they can also sell these art to others na
may patong ang presyo, ginagawang business kumbaga. Yung collector, they simply collect just to
appreciate for what art is. Ang dealer, direct supplier sila nung art. May mga shops sa pilipinas na kung
saan yung artist, siya din yung dealer.

PROCESSES OF ART Art has three processes or three parts.

1. Pre production

2. Production

3. Post production
Basically ang pre production any planning and conceptualization or research or gathering of inspiration
before the process of making the art is called pre production. Production is the part where you make the
art according to how you planned it to be. Post productions is whatever happens after the art has been
made. Either it is sold, put in a gallery for an audience to see, or even used for commission purposes or
simply put it in your own wall for you to adore.

MEDIUM AND TECHNIQUE

We can express our art forms in a variety of ways.
Medium – “is the mode of expression in which the concept, idea, or message is conveyed” Pwedeng ang
mode of expression nay un is through painting, sculpture, dance, theatre, music or poetry at iba iba pa.
ENGAGEMENT WITH ART In order for us to have access and therefore appreciate art, kailangan merong
lugar or way para makita natin ito or marinig or mapanood. Usually it is through the aid of
Exhibits/exhibition. Common example of exhibits are galleries or museum, may iba naman like the
performance artists that are very common in new York city, is the public places, nagiging ground for
