1. Express the rate of reaction in terms of the rate of change of each reactant and product in
the following reactions.

a) H2O2  2H  2I  I2  2H2O

b) 2NO2  F2  2NO2F

c) 2MnO4  5H2O2  6H  2Mn 2  8H2O  5O2

2. The half-life for the first-order decomposition of sulfuryl chloride at 320 ºC is 8.75 hr.

SO2Cl2 (g)  SO2 g  Cl2 g

a) What is the value of the rate constant, k, in s-1 ?

b) What is the pressure of sulfuryl chloride 3.0 h after the start of the reaction, if the
initial pressure is 722 mm Hg?

c) How long after the start of the reaction will the pressure of sulfuryl chloride
become 125 mm Hg?

3. a) If doubling the initial concentration of a reactant doubles the initial rate of

reaction, what is the order of the reaction with respect to the reactant?

b) If this concentration change causes the rate to increase by a factor of 8, what is the
order of reaction?

c) If the concentration changes and the rate remains the same, what is the order of
reaction?

4. Rate data were obtained for the following reaction at 25 ºC. What is the rate law
expression for the reaction?

2A  B  2C  D  2E

Expt [A]o / M [B]o / M [C]o / M Initial rate of formation of D

/ M min-1
1 0.10 0.20 0.10 5.0 x 10-4
2 0.20 0.20 0.30 1.5 x 10-3
3 0.30 0.20 0.10 5.0 x 10-4
4 0.40 0.60 0.30 4.5 x 10-3

5. Dinitrogen pentoxide, N2O5, is not very stable. In the gas phase or dissolved in a non-
aqueous solvent like CCl4, it decomposes by a first order reaction into N2O4 and O2.

2N 2 O5  2N 2O 4  O2

The rate law is

Rate = k[N2O5]

a) At 45 ºC, the rate constant for the reaction in CCl4 is 6.22 x10-4 s-1. If the initial
concentration of N2O5 in the solution is 0.100 M, how many minutes will it take for
the concentration to drop to 0.010 M?

b) If the initial concentration of N2O5 in a CCl4 solution at 45 ºC is 0.500 M, what will

its concentration be after exactly 1.2 h?

6. Draw a typical reaction energy diagram for a reaction that absorbs energy. Indicate the
net energy change, E, the activation energy, the location of the transition state and
potential energies for products and reactants.

7. The conversion of cyclopropane, an anesthetic, to propylene has a rate constant, k

=1.3×10-6 s-1 at 400 °C and k = 1.1×10-5 s-1 at 430 °C.

(a) What is the activation energy, Ea in kJ/mol?

(b) What is the value of the frequency factor, A, for this reaction?

2
8. Rate constants for the gas phase reaction

H2 + I2 

at various temperatures are as follows:

103 k / mol-1 L s-1 0.54 2.5 14 25 64

T / ºC 326 356 393 410 427

Use the Arrhenius equation to determine the values of Ea and A.
