ME123L-2 MECHANICAL PROCESSES:

WORKSHOP THEORY AND PROCESSES

MODULE 1D:
ROCKER ARM & RESEARCH 1
SHOP EXERCISE: ROCKER ARM
OBJECTIVES:
1. To be able to manufacture a rocker arm design using wood as material
2. To understand the principle of tapering
3. To know the proper design elements in the manufacture of a rocker arm design
METHODS AND ANALYSIS:
Proper utilization, knowledge in using hand tools, accurate measurement scaled, plan and
proper safely procedure is a significant factor while working in this project.
MATERIALS:
1-piece solid wood L 130 x W 62 x H 15 in mm
TOOLS TO BE USED:
➢ Rip cut saw
➢ Small file
➢ Triangular file
➢ Round file
➢ Rasp File
➢ Electric drill
➢ Drill bit size 3/8”
➢ Try square
➢ Compass
➢ Pencil
➢ Eraser
➢ Steel Ruler
➢ Lab Apron
➢ Safety goggles
➢ Safety Mask
➢ Bench vise
Module 1D: ROCKER ARM

PROCEDURE: (copy this procedure and convert it into flowchart format)

1. Using try square inspect the material
2. At the top side of the wood get the center of the wood
3. Draw circles with diameter equivalent of 20 mm
4. Create another circle with diameter equivalent of 40 mm
5. From the left side of the measure 12 mm and measure another 12 mm from the centerline
O to get the center of step 6
6. Draw circle with a dimeter equivalent to 24 mm and 12 mm with the center define by step
#5
7. From the right side of the measure 10 mm and measure another 10 mm from the centerline
O to get the center of step 8
8. Draw circle with a dimeter equivalent to 20 mm and 10 mm with the center define by step
#7
9. Create a tangent line connection the two circle with diameter of 24 mm and 20 mm to the
circle with a diameter of 40 mm see the drawing.
10. At the side part of the wood offset 5 mm at the top portion of the wood
11. Using electric drill create a hole for step # 3 (diameter = 20 mm), step # 6 (diameter = 12
mm), and step # 8 (diameter = 10 mm)
12. Using round file increase the diameter of left circle from 10 mm to 12mm diameter and
center circle from 10 mm to 20 mm
13. Using back saw remove the unnecessary parts of the wood see the drawing
14. At the side of the wood measure 10 mm marked it using pencil
15. Using set of file such as triangular file, round file, rasp file and small file remove the
unwanted or unnecessary part of the wood the limitation of filling should be 10 mm or step
# 14
16. At the top view of the wood offset 4 mm for all sides marked it using pencil
17. At the bottom side of the wood offset 4mm for all sides marked it using pencil
18. Using set of file create the circle at the center with diameter equivalent to 40 mm
19. Using set of file taper the wood see the taper details
20. Using sandpaper clean the workpiece

30.0 mm Topic Question (copy and answer)

1. What is a rocker arm? Explain in detail.
2. Where are rocker arms utilized? For what purpose
3. What are the various designs of a rocker arm? Enumerate all and define each, identify the
parts and its function and provide a photo/drawing for each.
4. What are the ideal leverage ratio for a rocker arm and why so?
5. What materials/elements are used to make rocker arms? Define all of them and provide an
explanation why that particular material was used.
6. Why is a specific geometry required for a rocker arm design? What is it called? Who
invented it?
7. When making shop exercise 4, what particular equipment/tool can be used to make the
rocker arm alone? State your reasons why.
8. What is a jig? Fixture? Why are these significant in making rocker arms?
9. What allowances are required to be added when making a rocker arm shop exercise 4?
Provide a clear definition and measurement and the reasons for your answer.
10. Where should these allowances be located on your practical work?
