Practical 4

Objective: To make a U part of Square Fitting Job involving different operations like, marking, measuring,
punching, hack sawing, filing and squaring etc to make an assembly as shown in the sketch.

Tools and Equipment Required:

File, Hand hacksaw, Bench Vice, Twist Drill, Try Square, Drilling Machine, Surface Plate, Angle Plate, Vernier
Caliper, Vernier Height Gauge, Round File, Half Round file, Dot Punch, Triangular File & Hammer.

Raw Material Required: MS flat 36 x 50 x 6 mm

Procedure:

1. Cut a piece of dimensions 36 x 50 x 6 mm from the given MS flat using Hacksaw.


2. File one edge of the work piece and check it for straightness using Try Square.
3. File adjacent edge, and check that two filed edges are at right angle to each other using Try Square.
4. File rest of the edge maintain dimension 34 x 48 x 6 mm.
5. Do marking for 'U' shape, keeping 1 mm filing allowance on all sides.
6. Do marking for drilling holes on horizontal side of 'U'.
7. Mark centers of holes and do center punching.
8. Drill 8 mm holes taking care that drilled holes do not cut edges beyond marking and adjoining holes.
9. Cut vertical edges using hacksaw.
10. Cut horizontal side using a Flat Chisel.
11. File to dimensions and keep checking for close fitting with the ‘T’ part.
12. File assembly to finish both sides.
13. Do final checking using Vernier caliper.
14. De burr all over.

Safety precautions

1. Always wear the Apron and closed shoes in the Shop for your personal safety.
2. Wearing of neck tie, jewelry, rings, and watches can hinder your work.
3. Do not drop file on the ground it may break.
4. Don’t use Files with loose or unsuitable handles.
5. All chiseling work should be done on the Anvil only.
6. Hacksaw blade should be properly tensioned.
