SECTION A: CASE STUDY

1. Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow.

After completion of high school in 2015, Sempa and Linda decided to

practice and apply the skills they had learnt and acquired in
Entrepreneurship education. Prior to their final examinations, they had
each got shs. 120,000 as their share of proceeds from their school
business project which they decided to use as startup capital. At the
start of their vacation, was the same time when Mbale Municipal council
had banned the use of polythen bags as they greatly made the place dirty
besides being non biogradable. To Sempa and Linda this was a business
opportunity as they immediately thought of starting up a paper bag
making business.

To ensure that they don’t loose their hard earned money, they agreed to
first conduct a feasibility study in order to understand in details the
product they were to produce, the users, the needs it would fulfill, the
price they would charge, the market share, level of competition, the total
project cost, means of financing the project, capacity utilization and
income estimation, expenditure and profitability estimates as well as risk
analysis.

From the study they estimated the costs to include shs.100,000 for the
paper cutting machine, shs. 250,000 for raw materials for the first
month to produce paper bags worth shs. 650,000 of cash sales during
the same period.

Their fears were however, the invasion of the market by other firms
producing a commodity like theirs. As a remedy, they decided to form a
private limited company in the name “LISA Paper World Limited” for
which they were required to provide a Memorandum of Association and
Articles of Association to the regional Registrar of companies –Mbale. The
company formation and registration process was projected to cost shs.
180,000, all done in the first month.

Linda approached her father and convinced him for a room in one of his
town buildings while Sempa succeeded in acquiring a loan from her
auntie of shs. 400,000 as a top up for the additional funds they needed
to kick-start.
