Lesson 1 of Module 2 Introductory Task

Name: Rayjean B. Camiguing

Instructor: Engr. Teresa Lumansoc

Direction: Examine the picture below and answer the following questions:

Figure 1. Sunlight hitting

e Earth

Questions:

1. Does the north pole receive more or less direct light than the equator and the south
pole? Why?
Ans:
Based on the image above, the earth is slightly tilted and its pole is in slant position. As of the
sun’s image, its rays strikes directly at the surface of the earth mostly at the equator part. As i
noticed in the figure, because of the position of the earth, the rays of the sun is more focused on
the equator and in the north pole part. While because south is more focused south receives less
sun rays. The more sun ray received in the area the more it receives heat and energy, while the
less sun rays receives the less it receives heat and energy.

2. Which hemisphere receives more indirect light? Why?

Ans:
As I observed in the figure above southern hemisphere receives indirect sun rays because
of the position of the earth. The position of the earth is in slant position and the
southern hemisphere receives less sun light than northern hemisphere.

3. Which hemisphere receives more direct light? Why?

Ans:
As I observed in the figure above northern hemisphere receives direct sun light because
of the position of the earth. The position of the earth is in slant position and the
northern hemisphere receives more sun light than southern hemisphere, because it is
tilted towards the sun..

4. Why do you think it is warmer at the equator than at the poles?

Ans:
The equator part of the surface of the earth is warmer because, the sun ray’s hit directly
towards the equator.
5. Why do different places on Earth have varying seasonal changes?
Ans:
Different paces on earth varies seasonal changes because, when  Earth tilts on its axis, the angle
of tilt causes the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to trade places throughout the year in
receiving the sun's light and warmth most directly.

6. What would happen to the seasons if the earth was tilted in the opposite direction, with
the Northern Hemisphere tilted away from the sun instead?
Ans:
The seasons would reverse, summer->winter, winter-> summer. This is because the axis
would be tilted in the same direction it would have been tilted half an orbit (year) later.
It wouldn't be that big of a deal, considered that the Northern and Southern
Hemispheres already have opposite seasons.
