DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
qDEFINITIONS & NOTATIONS
§ A differential equation (D.E.) is one that contains at least one (1)
derivative.

§ The “ORDER” of a D.E. is the same as the order of the highest-

ordered derivative in the equation.

§ The “DEGREE” of a D.E. is the same as the power (or exponent)

to which the derivative of the highest order in the equation is
raised.

§ A D.E. maybe “Ordinary” or “Partial” as to the typ e o f

derivative/s or differentials appearing in the equation.
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
qDEFINITIONS & NOTATIONS
§ A differential equation involving only ordinary derivatives
with respect to a single independent variable is called an
ordinary differential equation.

§ A differential equation involving partial derivatives with

respect to more than one independent variable is a partial
differential equation.
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
qDEFINITIONS & NOTATIONS
§ A “linear D.E.” is written as:

§ where a n(x), a n-1(x), . . . , a 0(x) and F(x) depend only on the independent
variable x.

§ If an ordinary differential equation is not linear, then we call it nonlinear.

non-linear D. E. linear D. E.
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
SOLVED PROBLEM NO. 1
Classify as an ordinary differential equation (ODE) or a partial differential
equation (PDE), give the order, and indicate the independent and dependent
variables. If the equation is an ordinary differential equation, indicate whether
the equation is linear or nonlinear.

SOLUTION:
Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) t = independent variable
2nd Order D.E. linear D. E.
x = dependent variable
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
SOLVED PROBLEM NO. 2
Classify as an ordinary differential equation (ODE) or a partial differential
equation (PDE), give the order, and indicate the independent and dependent
variables. If the equation is an ordinary differential equation, indicate whether
the equation is linear or nonlinear.

SOLUTION:
Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE) x = independent variable
2nd Order D.E. linear D. E.
y = dependent variable
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
SOLVED PROBLEM NO. 3

1st Order D.E. non-linear D. E.
y = dependent variable
DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
SOLVED PROBLEM NO. 4
Classify as an ordinary differential equation (ODE) or a partial differential
equation (PDE), give the order, and indicate the independent and dependent
