ONE OF THE GREATEST TABLE TENNIS PLAYERS OF ALL TIME. Born on October 03, 1965 Jan-Ove Waldner was born in Stockholm on 3 October 1965. His athletic potential was recognized at an early age and was displayed in 1982 when, as a 16-year-old, he reached the final of the European Championships, losing to distinguished left-handed teammate Mikael Appelgren, who was perceived then as the logical successor to the original Swedish World Champion, Stellan Bengtsson. While still developing his game, Waldner, along with several other Swedish players, traveled to a national-level training camp held in China, and was reportedly amazed by the dedication and solidarity of the Chinese players. He has claimed ever since that he learned much during his stay, and thereafter first began to regard his opportunity to succeed in table tennis as paramount. WALDNER'S ACHIEVEMENTS: He won silver medals in the World Championship Team events of 1983 held at Tokyo, 1985 at Goteborg, 1987 at New Delhi, 1991 at Chiba and in 1995 at Tianjin He secured the 1st place in Men’s Singles at the International Championship Pro Tour, held in the USA in the year 1990, Sweden in 1983, Poland in 1985, and Germany in 1986 Jan received the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal in 1992. At the Olympic Games of 1992 which were held in Barcelona, he won the Gold medal in Singles. Jan became the European Champion, 1996 in Men’s Singles in Bratislava. In 1997, he won his second World Singles title in Manchester. He earned a silver medal in the singles event of Sydney Summer Olympics in 2000 Waldner is one of the five male Table tennis players who have achieved a Career Grand Slam. He has won an Olympic gold medal in 1992, World Cup Singles event in 1990 and World Championships in the singles event in 1989 and 1997.
