Welcome to the T.L.E. – Beauty Care (Nail Care) Grade 9 Self-Learning Module
(SLM) on Disposition of waste products including used wax according to
OHSC and Department of Health requirements!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration

Activity 4: “Getting to Know It!”


Directions: Read the passages carefully to obtain a further understanding
on the subject matter.
PROPER WASTE DISPOSAL

This is a significant means in reducing hazardous wastes which may cause


contamination of environment, if not handled properly. There are certain types of
wastes that possess potential to cause diseases or get into water lines and wreak
havoc on the health standards.

TOP REASONS WHY PROPER WASTE DISPOSAL IS A MUST

As a future service provider, you have to take into account the top reasons
why proper waste disposal is a vital necessity in providing client satisfaction, here
are the best reasons gathered in doing things:

1. Helps you Organize


Firstly, being knowledgeable in disposing waste properly impacts your
overall space in your area. By doing this, it provides you with more free space to
leeway around inside your salon.

2. Orderly surroundings
Instead of putting things anywhere in your area, provide trash bins that are
specific for wastes to avoid pests and rodents in taking care of that area for you.
Not only it is clean to the eye, it can also provide stimulus on clients’ interest.

3. Engagement in Health and Sanitation


If you know proper waste disposal, then you are aware that you are
promoting Health and Sanitation. Given this, automatically clients will be informed
that your place is clean and comfortable.

4. Decreases the infectious pests


Pests rely on wastes that are not handled properly to increase numbers and
reside indefinitely. However, without wastes pests are definite to leave and even be
decreased in numbers.

5. Free from Biohazards


Equipment, tools and products may result to biohazards. The following can
leak to soil, water and even in the atmosphere. Thus, Proper waste disposal can
prevent it from happening.

6. Community Health Wise


Going back in history, people in communities suffered from unknown
diseases to which the cause are either unidentified or from poor handling of wastes.
Therefore, communities are better off with proper waste disposal.

7. Environmental Protection
As you know, proper waste disposal is very beneficial to you, further, it is
also helpful in protecting the environment as it stands as a responsibility towards
the welfare of the environment. Likewise, particular activities that does not dwell on
climate change is practice in it.

8. Physically Safe
Practically, proper waste disposal minimizes sharp tiny objects like nails,
puller, nippers and broken glasses everywhere, and even sharp nails which fell
from the clients’ fingers.

9. Waste Energy Increase


Recently, waste energy was introduced that is convertible to electricity which
came from the gases of disposal process.

10. Money Earner


A healthy and comfortable salon encourages clients to come back and be
able to experience the services provided, repeatedly.

Good Housekeeping System (5‟s)

In a salon, there are ways in keeping waste materials or products, below are
the following 5’s:

1. Seiri (Sort)
 TIDINESS, ORGANIZATION
 Taking out and disposing of unnecessary items
 Items that are not needed are thrown away or disposed

2. Seiton (Systematize)
 ORDERLINESS
 Tools, equipment, and materials must be systematically arranged for
the easiest and most efficient access
 Arrange / Organize necessary items in good condition
 Assign a place for everything for easy access and returning of the
equipment, tools and even documents.

3. Seiso (Sweep)
 CLEANLINESS
 Cleaning even if things are not dirty. Regular cleaning prevents things
from getting too dirty that it would be difficult to make it clean
 Indicates the need to keep the work place clean

4. Seiketsu (Standardize)
 STANDARDS
 Maintaining the workplace in high standard housekeeping
 Allows for control and consistency. Basic housekeeping standard
apply everywhere in the facility
 Housekeeping duties are part of regular work routines
 Prepare Housekeeping Standard Checklist. Checklist should be very
detailed
 Thoroughness is a requirement of EXCELLENCE

5. Shitsuke (Self-discipline)
 SUSTAINING DISCIPLINE
 Doing things spontaneously without having to be told
 “Teach by doing”
 It is a good discipline to leave the workplace cleaner than when it is
found
