Investigating The effect of Covid-19 Pandemic on the choice of apparels

Literature review

Covid-19 pandemic emerged and altered the normal ways people used to carry themselves on

ranging from the political, social to economical ways people used to do things. This is as a result

of trying to get rid of the pandemic and prevent contracting or spreading the pandemic, as

people emerge from this deadly pandemic most of their dressing code have really changed and

transformed to another dressing code.

Apparel industry is one of the industries which it has been the key driver of the economic

development and export-led industrialization, it has been a typical entry point for developing

countries due to its labor-intensive and low capital requirements nature it has generated over

25 million formal jobs and at least two times more informal jobs.

Apparel industry in Australia and Asia were affected by covid-19 as its direct supply was

disrupted and hence its production was highly hindered, its supply chain was also affected as

export became very expensive due to the rise of the pandemic and the demands of the apparel

industry goods reduced due to delays as a result of the pandemic.

As per the book Waring, J., Denis, J., Pedersen, A. R., & Tenbensel, T. (2021). undefined. Springer Nature.

people are finding it hard to adapt to their previous dressing code after emergence from the

pandemic and most of the employees are really contenting with how they will respond

telecommuters dressing during the pandemic. Employees who used to work from home due to

the Covid-19 pandemic would ware any type of clothing they wish since they could serve their

customers through phone call or even through internet but now as the pandemic goes down
they have to change their mode of dressing according to their company or organization’s

dressing code guidelines.

Formal dresses changed to informal dressers

Pandemic affected formal dressers such as government officials and teachers as they had been

dressing officially before the pandemic as dictated by the government regulation on the mode

of dressing for government official workers since pandemic affected their jobs and most of

them had to leave their jobs and go home while others had to continue with their jobs but they

had to work from home for a longer time hence their dressing code eventually changed from

formal to informal dressing as they where free to decide on what to ware and most probably

most of the people see formal dressing as expensive and tiresome to maintain.

Nearly 90% of the people who began working from home after the pandemic changed their

dressing code from formal to informal and they are now finding I hard to adapt to their formal

way of dressing after they have returned to their normal way of doing work since they have got

used to their informal ways of dressing.

Informal dressers who were previously formal dressers reported high level of productivity when

in informal dressing code than in formal according to a research of recent 1000 remote workers

done by couponFollow. In many cases the companies prohibiting gym shorts or blue jeans in

work has been eliminated after pandemic since people can now ware any form of dressing they

have been waring when the pandemic was at its peak.

Some formal dressers left their jobs and moved to their rural areas where the mode of dressing

is cultural based and therefore they had to change their formal way of dressing and abide to
their cultural needs since they could have been seen as outcasts and even discriminated by the

community members.

Some formal dressers also changed their mode of dressing as a result of preventing the spread

of the pandemic as some wore clothes which were viral prove and hence had to cease dressing

formally for some time, some of them have got used to such dressing code and they find it hard

to change even after the pandemic have reduced since they feel uncomfortable with their

formal dressing code.

After the pandemic the standard dressing for people who were previously working in office

then started working from home drastically changed as people could ware sweat pants and

those who used to ware closed shoes started waring open shoes since they had no rules guiding

their dressing code standard at home.

Students at times do not like dressing formally and after the start of the pandemic the schools

was closed as per the government directive on reduction of covid-19 pandemic as school could

cause gatherings which would have made the spread of the pandemic to be higher and

therefore the students started waring sweat pants at home.

Informal dressers changed to formal dressers

Some workers would wish to wear officially but their companies may prohibit their mode of

dressing due to their safety since some companies deals with whit very poisonous chemicals

and therefore after the company stops running due to the covid-19 pandemic the workers have

enough time to dress formally.

Workers such as mechanic and engineers could not ware official clothes due to the dirty nature

of their working place since they have to ware overalls so as to avoid their clothes being
greased as they perform various operations in their work places but when he pandemic started

they left their work place and started wearing their preferred official clothes.

Drivers of large trucks such as transits had to cease their jobs after the emergence of the Covid-

19 pandemic as they were ranked the most in terms of spreading the virus as they travel from

one country to another, some of them might be having a taste in wearing formal clothes and

therefore they were free to wear them after leaving their job.

People working in hardware and welding companies closed their companies due to the

pandemic and therefore those who have been wishing to wear official clothes had enough time

to wear them as they had gotten rid of overalls they have been waring in their work places and

they are finding it hard now to adapt to their informal ways of dressing.

A more relaxed approach to the dressing code

For most of the people dressing code standard has come to signal outdated form of workplace

control and some feel like dress code can help in provision of order and routine to their own

working lives, some says that the dress code cannot affect the order and the productivity of a

worker and therefore the dress code should not be considered.

After the pandemic people have adapted to different forms of dressing and therefore they

would like to continue to their new ways of dressing even after resuming to their work places

where some dressing code standards are required and some are prohibited, companies are

complaining that the workers should abide by their dressing code standards its adds to a

company reputation whether it is formal or casul the dress code will help to showcase
professionality of your company hence boosting reputation amongst competitors and

customers.

Employees feel that the dressing code they are forced to in their work place can make them to

feel stifled in their work place and take away their feeling of personality and expression, the

dress code is uncomfortable after long months of lockdown that the workers spent in track suits

and sweatpants, new dress code makes employees to feel anxious in meeting their

expectations in work place making them to be stuck uncomfortably at a desk all day long.

Covid-19 pandemic also changed the dressing code of most of the doctors as they had to cover

up all their bodies as they are attending a patient to avoid being infected. Doctors are now

changing their attire after every break as opposed to long before Covid-19 pandemic emerged

and changed their dressing code standard. People have got used to working in sweat pants and

slippers and therefore they are finding it hard to return back to business casual.

Covid-19 has brought dress code expectation to an end for many people, employees no longer

want to spend 45+ hours a week in a suit which is restrictive and shoes which they might find

themselves uncomfortable with them.

Some people argue that going for a business or a work place is not all about suits and it’s the

kind of job quality or service you are providing to your customer or clients to make them happy

and satisfied. I totally disagree to this suggestion since some work places needs a certain kind of

attire which prevents the health of the workers such as overalls and gloves.

After some people went to work from home on emergence of the pandemic they stop wearing

hard pants everyday and most of them says that they are more productive in sweat pants than
hard pants so they are suggesting that they should be allowed to wear the sweat pants in their

work place and they should not revert to the hard pants which makes them uncomfortable in

their daily chores.

Most of the people now wear heavy clothes during cold season so as to make their immunity to
be stronger and resist covid-19 virus and avoid cold which has almost same signs as the
pandemic to avoid confusions which may lead to admission of wrong patient thinking he/she is
Covid-19 positive.
Some countries made some reflectors to the vaccinated citizens so as to be worn during public

events so as to identify those who are vaccinated and non-vaccinated people so as to eradicate

people who are not vaccinated as they are said to be most affected and are the one who

spreads the virus at a higher rate than the people who are vaccinated.

Covid-19 has brought a great impact on fashion industry since the fashion industry has been

going through various transformations but on emergence of Covid-19 the industry has

drastically gone down.

Covid-19 reshaped the Australian fashion industry geographies drastically across the space of

design and production. In the midst of the pandemic those people in Australian fashion industry

have been able to build upon several strengths which are existing. Global retailers reported

different kinds of issues during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis since the garment workers and

internal employees had to be dismissed.

Summary of Literature Review

The effects brought by the change of the dressing code by the pandemic became permanent

and they are finding it hard to change while in some the same outfit they adapt during the

pandemic is the same dressing code standard needed in their work place.

Apparel industry was affected drastically by Covid-19 crisis as it brought down most of their

activities such as export and marketing of their products. Asian and Australian apparel industry

traced short term impact for suppliers, workers and the apparel buyers and they also

experienced damaged brought by Covid-19 pandemic.

Employees who ceased their jobs after the pandemic changed their dressing code standards

and some are now finding it hard to adapt to new way of dressing which is a requirement in

their work place.

The pandemic has affected the direct supply in the apparel industry hence reducing its

production and supply chain due to slow mode of exportation of raw materials and the

industry’s final products.
