Hey guys welcome to the breakdown pod. I am your host Olivia Elliott and today’s topic is
going to be a more in depth look on mental health as a whole and this episode especially
will be talking and fully diving into about the uk service camhs which specialising in mental
health in children and the downward spiral its going into.

So, I firstly wanted to talk about what is camhs, I am pretty sure many listeners who are
listening right now would have at least heard of camhs, if you haven’t I will explain it. Camhs
is a mental health service linked to the NHS for children, however camhs has a severe
negative outlook by children this is because over the years the funding for camhs and the
NHS has been getting worse and worse, now you as the listener may be thinking what
funding? The government in the uk have something called government in the uk have
something called government spending which Is a list of resources in the uk it has to look
after and pay a large sum of money from the citizens mostly, this has led to the severe
underfunding of the NHS because the government isn’t properly funding.

This leads also onto other services connected to the NHS like camhs. I further looked into
how many children are being affected by this even before covid, because the government
falls towards it being covid fault, I do agree that covid has caused massive delayed
responses to people being treated but however for years before covid the service camhs has
not been properly funded or been looked into need help for example trained staff. Mental
health as a whole needs people who are experienced and are trained in the force to look
after the children in need many of these nurses and therapists aren’t.

I further looked into some stats on how bad children’s mental health is getting more than 60
% more children over the past 4 years have been referred to camhs and been turned away
because of the long waiting lists and lack of trained nurses and therapists this is solely due
to lack of funding.

I then looked into how many children were being referred yearly and it was over 80 %more
children.

These stats are increasing getting worse, there are not many well-known services or services
made a made a try and take the overwhelmed amount of stress that has been put on
camhs. For example, schools legally have to have some form of school well-being service but
many don’t and if they do don’t use it, this leads to many parents and kids falling back on
the already overwhelmed service camhs. The government as a whole should split up camhs
in different bits and make more services like it.

Leading on from that I personally wanted to actually talk to a young person who has
suffered badly with her mental health and is passionate about how the government isn’t
doing enough to help camhs and talk about her own experience with camhs as well.
