PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED BY MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNERS OF

GRADE 10-DALTON

I. Introduction

As the technology and internet connectivity remains a problem for most

students. Department of Education (DepEd) is providing printed module materials
for them. Modular distance learning features individualized instruction that
allows learners to use self-learning modules in print or digital format/electronic
copy, whichever is applicable to the learner. The teacher takes the responsibility of
monitoring the progress of the learners.

Do you think that modular distance learning (MDL) is easy? Of course not,
because they are dealing with a lot of things at home, including household chores,
family problems, time management, lack of concentration due to noisy
surroundings, and deciding how to respond to their modules. They can only teach
themselves since they have no one else to teach them. The difficulties that Modular
distance learners had will be determined. This study is necessary for us to
understand the challenges that Modular distance learners may encounter.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study was to inform the problems encountered by

Modular distance learners in Grade 10-Dalton. In this study, the following questions
will be answered.

1. How many students responded to the provided issues with strongly agree,
agree strongly disagree, disagree, and neither agree nor disagree?

2. What are the most common reasons why Modular Distance Learning (MDL)
students struggle to accomplish their tasks?

a. Household chores

b. Time management

c. Procrastination

3. What are the reasons why Modular Distance Learning (MDL) students is
having a hard time understanding a lesson?

a. Lack of concentration

b. Low self-esteem
c. Inadequate teaching

Significance of the Study

This study will help to identify the needs, responsibilities, and problems that
each Modular Distance Learning (MDL) students has encountered.

To students. This study will benefit all students because they are the focus of
this study on learning their difficulties.

To researcher. This research will benefit and assist researchers in identifying

type of problems that Modular Distance Learning (MDL) students may have faced.

Scope and Delimitation

This study, titled "Problems Encountered by Modular Distance Learners in

Grade 10 Dalton," was conducted only at Tagumpay National High School. The aim
of this research is to understand more about the challenges that Grade 10 Dalton
Modular Distance Learning (MDL) students experience. Only 8 males, and 7
females make up the Modular Distance Learning (MDL) students in Grade-10
Dalton, for a total of 15 students.

Related studies

The “Implementation of Modular Distance Learning in the Philippine

Secondary Public Schools,” which was conducted in Balbalayang National High
School in a rural area of San Gabriel, La Union, and Baguio City National High
School in an urban area of Baguio City, Benguet during the school year 2020-2021,
was one of the reviewed studies. Purposive and quota sampling was used to
identify key informants from each of the selected schools, which included fifteen
(15) students, twelve (12) parents, and ten (10) school employees. Emails, Google
forms, and social media were used to distribute surveys and collect data. In the
interpretation and coding of data, Deductive Thematic Analysis was used.

The present research and “The Implementation of Modular Distance

Learning in the Philippine Secondary Public Schools” are related to each other
because both determined the problems encountered or challenges in Modular
Distance Learning. The present research, however, only included the student in the
research as a respondent.

Definition of terms

Procrastination - is the delay of completing the given assignment by the

students that are assigned to them, but they refuse to perform by strict preference
because of the lack of interest. A tendency prevailed to postpone the academic
activities and is almost always associated with anxiety. When you procrastinate,
instead of working on important, meaningful tasks, you find yourself performing
trivial activities.

Self-esteem - is used to describe a person's overall sense of self-worth or

personal value. Self-esteem is often seen as a personality trait, which means that it
tends to be stable and enduring. Self-esteem can involve a variety of beliefs about
the self, such as the appraisal of one's own appearance, beliefs, emotions, and
behaviors.

Distance Learning - education that uses one or more technologies to

deliver instruction to students who are separated from the instructor and to support
regular and substantive interaction between the students and the instructor
synchronously or asynchronously.

Time Management - is the process of organizing and planning how to divide

your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work
smarter – not harder – so that you get more done in less time, even when time is
tight, and pressures are high. Failing to manage your time damages your
effectiveness and causes stress.

Self-Learning - is defined as a method of garnering information and after

processing and retaining it without taking the help of another individual and become
metacognitively, motivationally and behaviorally engaged. It is the responsibility of
the learner to learn and hold on to the knowledge without the help of another
human resource. It is a modern way of learning that helps a person to teach himself
skills and knowledge that will prove relevant to his daily activities.

III. Conclusion

Summary of Findings

The finding of the study was summarized according to the statement of the
problem stated in Chapter 1.

1. How many students responded to the provided issues with strongly agree,
agree strongly disagree, disagree, and neither agree nor disagree?

In question no. 1, 3.6 students who answered agree, 3.33 who answered neither
agree or disagree in question no.2, In no.3, 3.7 students also answered neither
agree or disagree, 3.44 students in question no.4 who answered neither agree or
disagree, 4.22 students answered strongly agree in no.5, 3 students answered
neither agree or disagree in no.6, 2.33 answered neither agree or disagree and
strongly agree in no.7, 3.7 answered agree or neither agree or disagree in no.8,
3.44 answered agree in no.9, 3.22 also answered agree in no.10, 3.22 answered
agree or disagree in no.11, 3.6 answered agree and neither agree or disagree in
no.12, 3.6 answered agree in no.13, 4.11 also answered agree in no.14, and lastly
3.8 also answered agree in question no. 15. The average weighted mean is 3.49
and the 75th percentile is 3.7.

2. What are the most common reasons why Modular Distance Learning
(MDL) students struggle to accomplish their tasks?
a. Household chores. There are 3.7 according to the result on weighted
mean doing much household chores than academic work.
b. Time management. There are 3.44 according to the result in weighted
mean that time allotment on accomplishing all the learning tasks is not enough.
c. Procrastination. There are 2.33 according to the result on weighted mean
that they spend most of their time playing different games (online, offline, physical)
than doing learning tasks.

3.What are the reasons why Modular Distance Learning (MDL) students is
having a hard time understanding a lesson?
a. Lack of concentration. Not all learners are in good place some of them are
on the noisy place that results them lost their focus on studying.
b. Low self-esteem Based on the result of weighted mean there are 3.6
agree that have fear of failure and lack of self-confidence.
c. Inadequate teaching According to the result in weighted mean that there
are 3.22 that consider their selves as dependent learner who needs assistance to
accomplish the learning tasks.
Conclusion

Based on the indicated findings, the following conclusion were drawn.

1. The respondents on the question number 5 has the highest weighted

mean and the respondents on the household chores also has the highest weighted
mean based on the findings.

2. The findings revealed that 75 percent of the respondent mostly answered

Agree and most of the respondent do household chores than academic works.

3. The significance of this research asserts that the Modular distance

learners in Grade 10-Dalton are encountering certain challenges. The objective
was to determine why the student was not cooperating and why the student was
struggling because of this method of learning. Based on the table, there are certain
issues that students must address and search for ways to improve.

Recommendation

The following are some recommendations from the researchers:

 The researchers recommend this study as future reference for similar or

related study.

 It is recommended by the researchers to anyone who is interested in

learning about the possible problems that all Modular Distance Learning
(MDL) students have experienced.

 The researcher would like to recommend that it would be better if there

would be ample time for the quality checking of its content. There should
also be areas, particularly in mathematics, Where the lessons should be
presented more comprehensively to be best understood by students.

 The researcher recommends this to students to do their modules for

continues learning.

 The Researchers also recommend to Parents and Teachers that they should
be aware of their roles and responsibilities in teaching learners for them to
learn efficiently and effectively.
