INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER AND ITS APPLICATION IN

ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE

PRE LAB TASK

Objectives:

Main objective of this lab is to develop understanding of basic concepts of computer, its
software and hardware parts and applications of computer regarding to Engineering.

Introduction:

Computer:

A device which is used to accept data and process it, convert it in meaningful
information. It is an electronic device which can solve various problems according to instruction
set given to it.

THEORY:

Data:

We can define the term Data as fact, figure and information that is stored in or used by
a computer. Following is the example of data.

e.g. “Email” is an example of Data.

Information:

After processing data computer convert it in information. Information is summarization of data.

e.g. Such as summaries and totals.

2+2=4

2-2=0
Program of Computer:
Programs are instructions of computers to process data. Without programs a computer is
useless.

PARTS:

It has two parts.

1. Hardware
2. Software

Hardware:

It is the gathering of physical parts of a PC framework. This incorporates the PC case,

screen, console, and mouse. It likewise incorporates all the parts inside the PC case, for example,
the hard plate drive, motherboard, video card, and numerous others. Hardware is the thing that
you can physically touch.

Software:

Set of guideline that we tell a PC ''WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO”. Anything that
can be stored electronically is Software, rather than capacity devices and display devices which
are called equipment. Those parts of PC which we can see however can't touch.

“HARDWARE, SOFTWARE RELATION IS LIKE A BODY TO ITS SOUL”. Both of them

work together. For execution software needs hardware. Fig 1

Parts of Hardware:

It has following parts,

1. Input Unit.
2. Output Unit
3. System Unit.

Types of Software:

It has following types

System Software:

These are software used to control system and also used to run applications.

e.g. DOS, Unix etc.

Operating System:

Such programming that procedure that readies the PC to be utilized by the user. A
working framework (OS) is framework software that oversees PC equipment and software assets
and gives normal administrations to PC programs. Fig 2

Utility Software:

Software that keeps up the PC to secure it. Eg ; Antivirus, Utility programming are those
product which are utilized by everybody e.g. MS Office.

Custom Software:

Extraordinarily made for a man or particular organization/association. "Just possessed by

some particular person". It is particularly planned and modified for an individual client.

Presentation Software: -

Presentation Software are those products which are utilized to make PC presentations.
E.g. PowerPoint.

Layout:

An arrangement on keyboard is called layout. It could be any particular visual,

mechanical or functional setting of the keys. The following arrangement is for keyboard.

e.g. QWERTY

Parts: It has following parts. Fig 3

Mouse

A computer mouse is an input device which has following events.

1. Drag
2. Drop

It has following types:

1. Mechanical mouse
2. Optical Mouse
3. Wireless Mouse.

Output Device:

An output device is used to communicate the processed data carried by computer. It

converts electronically generated information into understandable form for human. electronically
generated information into human-readable form.

TYPES OF OUTPUT:

1. Text
2. Graphics
3. Audio
4. Video
5. Printers
6. Visual displays
7. LEDs & LCDs
