5 WORDS A WEEK/Reading Selections-Elementary

Note for the teacher:

Five Words A Week

1. Give to learners the set of words in advance, so they can study them very well.

2. Set time weekly for the pupils to orally recognize 5 words a week with speed and accuracy through virtual
recognition.
3. Ask pupils to look for the meaning of each word and let them write the meaning in their performance
notebook which will be submitted to the teacher for checking. (This will be for Grades 1-3.)

4. For Grades 4-6, aside from the virtual oral recognition of the 5 words a week require them to look for the
meaning of each word, then let them use each word in a meaningful sentence. This will be written in their
performance notebook which will be submitted to the teacher for checking.

5. To determine the word reading score of the learner, follow the guide below.

Word Recognition Level:


97-100 – Independent
90-96- Instructional
89 & Below- Frustration
Therefore, with the example given, learner in the recognition of words belongs to Instructional. Teacher should
have the record of the result because this will be monitored by the EPS and the DIC.

For Virtual Reading Selections as Enhancement Activity in Preparation for the coming Pre-test

Note for the Teacher

1. Give to learners the copy of the selection in advance for them to study it well except reading
comprehension questions which will be asked during actual reading.
2. Set time for each pupil to virtually read the selection. Then ask him/her questions.
3. Each question regardless of level shall be given 2 points.
4. Follow the guide below in getting the reading ability of each learner.

Therefore, with the example given, learner in reading selection belongs to DEVELOPING READER. Teacher
should have the record of the result for file and monitoring purpose. SCHOOL READING COORDINATOR
shall discuss this to teachers before the activity begins for the latter’s awareness. TY so much.
