7. Review (answers may vary)

As a recap, let us answer these:

1. What is the general term for cultivating the soil?

2. In preparing a small area for planting vegetables, the
initial breaking of the soil is usually done. What garden
tool should we use to do the job?
3. Why is there a need to prepare the land for planting? (answers may vary)
4. What are the tools used in land preparation?
5. Give the steps in land preparation. (answers may vary)
Okay, very good!

This time, we will discuss another topic. If ever you (answers may vary)
still have questions on our previous lesson, please feel
free to ask questions so that we can move on to another (answers may vary)
topic.

8. Motivation
(Role playing)

Mystery Box

We have here a mystery box, containing different

seeds. I need a volunteer to choose a seed from the
mystery box, after choosing the seed you will then role
play as a farmer and identify if the chosen seed is good
for planting or not.

Who can volunteer?

I will volunteer, Ma’am.
Yes please, pick a seed on the mystery box.
(the students role play and identify the chosen seeds)

(class discussion about the role playing) (answers may vary

Very good!

Are you having an idea, for our topic for today? It’s all about seeds, Ma’am.

Okay, very well. It’s all about seeds.

THE SEEDS

Characteristics of Good Seeds

After preparing the land, the next important step is to

select good seeds for planting. The success of
vegetable production lies on the proper selection and
storage of seeds to be used for planting. Seeds are dried
and stored so that their quality is highly maintained.

1. Seeds are very important structures in plant so they

must be given proper care. They are planted so that the
dormant embryo inside the seed germinates. 2. For a
seed to germinate, certain conditions must be met.
3. This means that the germination of seeds will not
start unless they are subjected to conditions favourable
for their growth. Good seeds will yield more than the
ordinary ones, and this means better harvests and
higher profits for the vegetable grower.

In the process of selecting good seeds, there are factors

to consider.
1. Free from pests and diseases. The seeds must not
have been hosted by insect pests and diseases before
they are stored.
2. Origin. Good seeds are taken and selected from
healthy parent plants of known variety.
3. Proper moisture content. Seeds which are not
properly dried could lose their good qualities in
storage. The acceptable moisture content is 14%.
4. Shape. Deformed and irregularly – shaped seeds
tend to produce poor harvest. Select seeds with regular
shape and structure.
5. Mode of storage. Seeds which are stored in a bottle
with a desiccant such as charcoal will preserve the
viability of the embryo. The desiccant will prevent the
embryo from drying up
How to Identify Good Seeds
Seed selection is done right after harvesting. Good
seeds are separated to produce potential seedlings for
transplant or " punla ".

The selection process follows important

considerations:
1. Variety. Hybrid seeds are higher yielding varieties
than the ordinary ones.
2. Market Demand. Choose vegetable seeds with
higher market demand.
3. Adaptability. The seeds must be able to adapt to the
climatic and soil conditions of the community. For
example, there are vegetables which should be planted
only during the dry or wet seasons. The ideal seeds,
however, are those of vegetables that can be planted in
both seasons. There are also plants that can withstand
sandy or loam soils. The important thing is to consider
the climate and soil preferences for the seed.

Steps in selecting and storing seeds

1. Look for a mature parent fruit from healthy parent

plants only.

2. Dry the fruits under the heat of the sun for 2 to 3

days. This is the period needed to attain 14 % moisture
content.
3. Remove the seeds from the fruits.
4. Discard the deformed and wrinkled seeds.
5. Store the smooth and regularly – shaped seeds only.
6. Treat the seeds with insecticide (optional). This is
done to prevent the seeds from infestation.
7. Prepare a storage jar by cleaning the inner part with
soap and water, then dry it under the sun.
8. Prepare a small paper envelope and place the seeds
inside.
9. Crush a piece of charcoal into powder and put it at
the bottom of the storage jar.
10. Place a perforated cardboard to cover the powdered
charcoal as a desiccant. A desiccant is a substance that
prevents the build-up of moisture which may affect the
quality of seeds.
11. Place the paper envelope containing the seeds in
the jar.
12. Cover the jar. This process of storage will provide
moisture to the seeds long enough to prolong their
viability.

4. Application

(Visit a local farmer and observe a process of seed

selection and storage. Take note of the steps
involved and ask the farmer questions about their
practices.

5.ASSESSMENT

1. Write a report on the importance of selecting good

seeds for planting. Including the steps in selecting and
storing seeds and examples of good seed varieties.

2. Identify three factors that affect the germination of

seeds and explain how they can be merged to ensure
successful crop production.
