Senior Project Topic: Learning to Care for Chickens & Building Them a Coop

7/9/21 1.5 hrs I asked our family friend to be my mentor and told her about my
project. She agreed to mentor me and looked at the fencing and
run that we had been trying to make work. She bulleted a list of
concerns we needed to address and we talked about why those
things were important. She also brought me 2 books to look
through and start my research.
7/10/21 40 min I looked through the Raising Chickens for Dummies book and
concentrated on the marked pages and notes my mentor had
made.
7/12/21 1 hr I spent time reading through some of the important sections in
both of the books my mentor gave me.
8/14/21 2.5 hrs I went to my mentor’s home and she showed me her chicken
coop and run and explained why she had things set up a certain
way. She also told me about loosing her 1st flock to coyotes (the
entire flock) and what she had learned from that painful lesson.
9/6/21 1 hr I made a final decision to make this project my senior project. I
wrote my Letter of Intent.
9/6/21 30 min I texted and then called my mentor and asked her to go online
and look at the coop design I was thinking about. I wanted her to
tell me what was positive and what was negative about the
design.
9/8/21 15 min I purchased the chicken coop plans and printed out a copy.

9/9/21 1 hr I went to Home Depot to get my materials, but ended up not

getting them because a lot of the lumber was not in stock. I was
told to order online as a better solution.
9/9/21 45 min I took the time to order all my materials online.

9/14/21 1 hr Materials were picked up and brought home to garage.

9/16 - 6 hrs First time to work on the building and with the help of my dad
9/18/21 and sister we finally got the floor built. My mom stained it for us.
9/25/21 3.5 hrs Built the first wall and attached it to the floor.
9/28/21 2 hrs Built the back wall.

10/1/21 3 hrs Built the wall with the windows and planned for the front wall
with the door.
10/2/21 3.5 hrs Built the front wall and one nest box to see if it would work
correctly under the window wall. Made plans for the front door.
10/5/21 2 hrs Rebuilt a nest box because we decided the first one was too large.

10/16/21 4 hrs Built the row of nest boxes and attached under the windows.

10/19/21 1.5 hrs Started the roof

10/22/21 3.5 hrs Worked on the roof to get the angles correct and straight.

10/23/21 4 hrs Continued and finished most of the roof and worked on door.

10/30/21 1.5 hrs Finished door and attached to coop.

10/30/21 2 hrs Paint and extra decorative hardware on windows (my mom and
sister did this so no credit hours for me)
11/1/21 1 hr Reinstalled fencing around coop that we took down so we could
work in the area and then moved the chickens into the coop.
They seem to love it!
