Pots Out of Recycled Juice Packs

I. INTRODUCTION

This proposal is about making pots out of recycled juice packs. During the pandemic, most of my
neighbors including my mother and aunts were encouraged to start planting. Taking care of their plants became
their pastime and entertainment to the extent that they bought lots of different pots for their plants which are not
cost-efficient during this pandemic. Not only my mother, aunts and my neighbors addicted in buying plants
including pots in fact it became very popular, it’s all over in the social media and other platforms they called
them as “Plantitos and Plantitas”. My sister loves to drink juice from juice packets and I have noticed my
mother cutting all these packets so she can turn them into small pots for her seedlings. Although she recycled
materials, it is only for one-time use since she can only use them for their seedlings and dispose after because
they are not sturdy enough to be reused again. I have also observed that garbage collectors rarely come to collect
our garbage. After observing how often garbage collectors pick our trash, I have now come up with an idea on
how I would help my mother not to buy more pot through making her recycled pots and at the same time I
lessen the trash by collecting juice packs. What I need to accomplish is to create pots out of recycled materials,
such as juice packs that my mother and aunts can make use of. Also, it is for me to help in the waste reduction
on our barangay.

II. PROBLEM STATEMENT

Recycling is the action or process of converting waste into reusable material. I saw how my mother
recycled the materials she can turn into a pot but not for long-term use which means that the recycled material
will end up in the trash after recycling them. The importance of turning these recycled materials into handmade
crafts is for us to give more importance to it since we have given effort into making them. When juice packs are
made into a pot with better quality, then the longer the time it can be used in planting. Another is that turning
these juice packets into recycled pots will help in the reduction of waste.

III. OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this project are:

1. To make quality pots made out of juice packs and condiments that come in sachets.
2. To make sure that the pots are used for planting and not as additional trash.
3. To ensure that the streets will not have these juice packets and others as trash.

IV. METHODOLOGY

The procedures that are to be made to accomplish this project are:

1. To collect the needed materials such as the juice packets and preparing for a pair of scissor, needles and
thread.
2. Clean and dry the collected materials.
3. Start sorting the raw materials according to their size for a better quality of pot.

After cleaning and sorting the materials that will be needed, I can start by sewing the juice packs during my
free time.On Saturdays or Sundays, I can now sew one pot at a time so it will be available if my mother needs
one.

V. RESOURCES

The things that need to be facilitated in this project are the collection and cleaning of the collected raw
materials either from the household or in the neighborhood. There will be no money involved in making this
project since all the materials such as thread, scissors, and raw materials can be found inside our home and in
our neighbourhood.

VI. ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION

1. What are the problems you have encountered during the implementations of your projects?

The problems that I have encountered during the implementations of my projects are:

 The juice packs that we had in our home was not enough and I go around to our barangay to collect and
the problem is that the tetra pack that I collected some are mixed into biodegradable waste and it come
up that some of the tetra packs are place in the bottom and it’s hard to pick up. And some also are cut
into pieces and I can’t be able to re-use them.
 I also struggle in the part of forming the juice packs into pot because I tried many times to form like pot
but it didn’t work.

2. Why do you think those problems occurred? How did you manage your problem?
 The reason why the juice packs are mixed into biodegradable waste is that the residence in our barangay
didn’t separate biodegradable from non-biodegradable what important only to them is just throwing their
garbage in the proper place, they don’t mind if their garbage are mix. I manage my problem by getting
tools to our home like the shovel and wear gloves to collect those tetra packs. As we arrive in our gate I
prepare a water to wash and after I put them in our roof to dry and dis-infect them after, additional I
made a sign and I place it to the center in our garbage area that indicating the biodegradable and non-
biodegradable so that they can easily see it if ever their throwing their garbage again. And also I manage
my problem by searching for other garbages and I tried to ask our neighbours especially those have
store.

 The reason why it didn’t work to form like pot because the style on how did I sewed the tertra pack of
pancham together is wrong. I manage this problem by getting one of our pot as an example and then
every time I sew I measured it to the pot and also I search in the you tube and it serve as my guide to
make a perfect pot.
1. What was the most enjoyable part of doing your project?
The most enjoyable part of doing my project will be the last part that I was preparing the soil and
after I was going to fill my improvise pot and at the same time transferring the plants into it. Upon filling
the pot of soiled it’s exciting because finally I can now see the outcome of my project. Additional it’s
enjoyable at the last step of my project because the outcome is very priceless and I’m glad that I didn’t
waste my time in implementing this project.

2. Do you consider doing your own project a meaningful experience? Why?

Yes, I consider it as a meaningful experience that I have been encountered because I was able to
come up a bright idea that I’ve never done before and thru this project proposal I was able to appreciate
more doing recycle things and it’s worth it to spend your free time on doing this things. My project
proposal gave me personally a different perception about recycling things and the feeling of being proud
of because after I implement my project I know that I made a nice and long term improvised pot that
didn’t cost a lot of money, it’s made of effort, care and love. For me it’s a great opportunity that we the
youth should experience also to create our own recycling things, it’s promoting a good strategy from us
to prevent buying expensive things.
