Plate Boundaries - Virtual Station Exploration

The above icons are clickable links that take you directly to each page. Complete the left-hand
column first, then move to the right. Be sure to do the “Challenge” last. It is easier to read slides
in “Present” mode, but to type in text boxes, you must be in “Edit” mode (double click the box to
edit).
Analysis and Conclusions: Answer the following questions.

1. What are the 3 main types of tectonic plate boundaries?

A divergent boundary te, a convergent boundary, and a transform boundary

2. What would be the best title for this passage? (Highlight)

A. How Plate Boundaries Impact Humans
B. All About Earthquakes and Volcanoes
C. How Mountains are Made
D. 3 Main Types of Plate Tectonic Boundaries

3. Which is the only plate boundary that doesn’t involve magma?

Transform boundary

4. Describe the force that moves the continents.

Convection currents from the mantle move plates apart and this causes the plates to
separate and new floor comes where the gap was

(Answer the questions below when you are finished)

Convection currents
They used a baggage claim Transform, convergent and
metaphor to show that divergent.
something has to push/pull a
plate for it to be moving faster
than the current it is riding on

1. Click on “Layers” - Top Left Corner!

2. Toggle on the “Plate Boundaries” and “Volcanoes” (Click in the boxes)
Notice locations of volcanoes and plate boundaries - you can untoggle and retoggle
the “Plate Boundaries” box to really make this point.

Describe the relationship between volcano location and plate boundaries: They are directly
correlated. In tectonic boundaries, volcanoes are almost always along with convergent
boundaries due to melting crust, as seen on the west coast of America
3. Go back to “Layers” and toggle on “Earthquakes” as well (all 3 boxes should be checked)
Describe how the pattern of earthquakes on the map is different from the volcanoes:
Although strongly correlated, earthquakes are not directly related to tectonic activity. In fact,
some earthquakes can be felt hundreds of miles away from the nearest boundary.

Describe how the pattern of earthquakes is similar to volcanoes:

While not directly related, most earthquakes are in fact next to tectonic plates, as seen by
the cluster along the west coast of America and the east of Russia.

Look at some of the earthquakes that are far away from plate boundaries. What is often
(not always) found nearby these earthquake locations: A major change of elevation.
You will draw a sketch or go out and search for a drawing or illustration that shows that you
understand each of the four major concepts we are working on.

For each sketch/illustration, you should write a short description of what is happening in the
illustration….IN YOUR OWN WORDS!

The four sketches/illustrations you should provide:

- Convergent Boundary
- Divergent Boundary
- Subduction Zone
- Transform Boundary

Insert each of your sketches/illustrations on the next slide. HERE

Subduction Zone: Transform Boundary:

Use your newly gained knowledge of plate
tectonics to answer the following short answer
questions. Be as complete and detailed with your
answers as possible!

Compare convergent plate boundaries that have plates of the same density to convergent plate boundaries
with plates of different densities.

What causes the tectonic plates to move?

Describe what geological features are created at convergent, divergent, and transform plate boundaries
