UNDERSTAND
The Different Types of Plate Boundaries

What happen when tectonic plates move?

The Earth’s lithosphere, which includes the crust and upper mantle, is made up of a
series of pieces, or tectonic plates, that move slowly over time. This movement causes
tectonic plates to move away from each other, collide, and slide past each other.
Thus, the different plate boundaries occur.

SAQ-1: Describe divergent, convergent and transform fault plate boundary.

SAQ-2: What is the difference between divergent plate boundary and convergent plate boundary?
SAQ-3: How does transform fault plate boundary differ from divergent and convergent plate
boundary?

REMEMBER
Key Points

 When the Earth’s lithosphere move, it causes tectonic plates to move away from
each other, collide, and slide past each other. Thus, plate boundaries occur.
 There are three (3) types of plate boundaries:
1. Divergent plate boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other;
2. Convergent plate boundary occurs when two tectonic plates collide or meet; and
3. Transform fault plate boundary forms when two tectonic plates slide past each other
causing it to split into pieces and carried in opposite directions.
 In terms of effect, plate boundaries can be classified as constructive, destructive and
conservative:
1. Divergence is constructive because a new oceanic crust is formed when magma rises
from the Earth’s mantle to the surface and solidifies.
2. Convergence is destructive because the denser oceanic crust is destroyed when forced to
move down into the mantle where it begins to melt under a less dense continental crust.
3. Transform fault plate boundary is conservative because in contrast to convergent and
divergent boundaries, crust is cracked and broken at transform margins, but is not created
or destroyed.
 Earthquakes are common in all types of plate boundaries. However, volcanic
activities are only evident in divergence and convergence of plates.
