Lesson: Divergent Boundaries: Continental Rift Valleys and Mid Oceanic Ridges

LAKI VOLCANO, Iceland

Divergent plate boundary is one of the types of boundaries formed from the active movement of
the plates.
Through this material, you will be able to explain the processes that occur along divergent
plate boundaries

What’s New
Activity 1: Going Separate Ways
Procedure:

1. Analyze the photographs of rift valleys (topmost pictures) and oceanic ridges below, and answer the
questions that follow. Write your answer in your activity notebook.

2. Q1. What are common in the four pictures?

Q2. Millions of years ago, the land masses in each picture were once connected. What do you think is
happening to the Earth’s crust in those pictures?

Activity 2: RIFT VALLEYS: Evidence of Divergent Plate Boundary

Directions: Illustrate the steps on the formation of continental rift valley. Write your answer on
your activity notebook.

Q1. If this event continues for millions of years, what do you think will be the effect on the crust?

Q2. Complete the drawing below to illustrate your answer in question number Q1.

After millions of
years.

Discussion
Divergence of Plates

Formation of rift valleys are indications that the crust is spreading or splitting apart. Tensional
stress is the stress that tends to pull rocks apart. This occurs above rising convection current. The rising
current pushes up on the bottom of the lithosphere, lifting it and flowing literally beneath it.

When a spreading center develops within a continent, the crust may break into several
segments. The breaking leads to the formation of down faulted valleys called rift valleys. It is also
associated with the rising of hot materials from the mantle. The rift valley increases its length and depth
as the spreading continues. East African Rift Valley is the example of continental rift valleys. Valleys
develop many linear lakes and linear sea, similar to the Red Sea today.

Divergent boundaries are formed from the separation of giant slabs of rock called
. All divergent plate boundaries experience stress. When a continuous
rifting happens over millions of years on two continental crust, it forms _ . East
African Rift valley is the product of this process. It may also form linear sea, an example of
it is the

Modified TRUE or FALSE
Directions: Carefully read the following sentences below. Write TRUE if the statement is
correct. If it is false, change the underlined word/s or phrase/s to make the sentence correct. Write
your answer in your activity notebook.

1. Rift Valley is a feature that forms near divergent boundaries between two pieces of
continental crust.
2. Continental rift valley develops trenches.
3. East African Rift Valley is an example of continental rift valley.
4. Divergent plate boundary is considered as constructive plate boundary because it creates
new oceanic crust.
5. Shearing stress accounts for the separation of two plates.

Discussion

I saw this image on my phone,

I wonder how this happened?

My Science teacher
discussed about the
plate tectonic
movement. I think I
know that image as my
teacher discussed the

As I remember, there are three types of

plate tectonic movements: convergent,
divergent and transform.
I’ll be telling you about transform boundary.
For example, let’s pretend these two shapes
are the tectonic plates. They are passing by
each other and missed each other.
This is a representation of transform
boundary which looks like what happened
to the image above.

7
So this is world. This feature is formed because two tectonic plates pass by
each other without touching.

When two tectonic plates slide past each other, everything starts to move
and shake.
That causes an earthquake!

Plate boundaries are the line between two different plates- and they are in
constant movement!

There are three types of Plate Tectonic Boundaries which are classified according to plate
movements- the Divergent, the Convergent and the TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARIES.
Plate movements contribute to the formation of geologic features and occurrence of different
geological phenomena.

CONSERVATIVE PLATE BOUNDARIES

Because they involve no addition or loss of lithosphere at the Earth’s

surface. (Note: Thought is incomplete. Kindly complete the phrase.)

It lacks spectacular features unlike convergent and divergent. It is

characterized by having volcanoes that are spread out over a large areas.

It has lots of seismic activities, but

most of it happens in a shallow
depth.

Examples of this transform fault are Pakistan’s Chaman fault, Turkey’s

North Anatolian Fault, North America’s Queen Charlotte Fault and the famous San Andrea’s Fault in
California.
Volcanoes in an east-west zone across central Luzon may be associated with a “leaky”
transform fault that connects the two subduction zones. The transform fault is offset to the right by the
younger Philippine fault. The volcanoes of the Philippines are the deadliest and costly in the world.

8
To differentiate the Transform Fault to the other type of plate boundary, see the image below.

Enrichment Card
Activity 1:
Directions: Identify the following if it is a fact or a bluff.
If the answer is bluff, change the underlined word to make the statement correct. Write your
answer in your activity notebook.

1. Plate tectonics theory is a theory that Earth’s outer shell is divided into several plates that glide over
the mantle, the rocky inner layer above the core.
2. Convergent is when two tectonic plates move away from each other.
3. Transform is when two tectonic plates slide past each other horizontally.
4. Divergent is the is the plate tectonic boundary that can cause earthquakes.
5. Convergent boundary is also known as Conservative plate boundary.
6. Transform boundary has lots of seismic activities, but most of it happens in a shallow depth.
7. Transform boundary has lack of spectacular features but can create a great power of moving plates
which can be seen with the great number of earthquakes that takes place.
8. Convergent boundary do not create or destroy
crust. 9. Transform can occur in any type of plate
boundary.
10. San Andreas fault is an example of transform boundary of fault.
