Sudbury Hall Gasworks M odel – 1.

Base Layout and Gasholder


This model is designed to provide an int erpretation of the original layout of the Gasholder vessel wall
former Sudbury Hall gasw orks. The gasw orks are a rare surviving example of an
ornate privat e gasworks built in the style of the surrounding estate buildings. The
Sudbury Est at e being built in the rest oration st yle, the gasworks was built in 1874
and w as designed by George Devey, a noted architect of t he t ime. The gasworks
supplied the house and various propert ies in the village, operating up unt il the
1920’s.

The gasworks is Grade II listed and has been in urgent need of repair and the local Tabs Tabs
communit y has formed t he Sudbury Gasworks Rest orat ion Trust (SGRT), a
building preservat ion trust which aims t o save the building and adapt it to serve
t he communit y once again (ht t p:/ / www.sudburygasworks.com/ hist ory/ ).
Sudbury hall is locat ed in the village of Sudbury, Derbyshire, UK and the nearby
Hall is now a Nat ional Trust Propert y. This model is one of a series creat ed by
Russell Thomas for use in educational and public engagement project s.

1. Print out on a thin but firm card for best results, tweezers and a good glue
Purifier may be helpful.
2. Cut out the base layout (left).
room 3. Cut out gasholder vessel wall (top) and using glue on the tab on left hand
side of the tank, attach to the opposite end forming a cylinder.
4. Cut out gasholder roof, fold pointed tabs inward apply glue to tabs and

insert inside the vessel walls.
5. Fold tabs on the base of the gasholder vessel wall inward and apply glue

so it can be attached to the gasholder base.
Gasholder Base 6. Cut out the retort house, fold all points as marked by dashed lines to

appropriately numbered tabs.

room 7. Cut out coal store, cutting along tiled roof adjacent to gable end. Fold
tabs, glue pitched roof via tab 12, glue to base and retort house,
5 matching and folding number tabs inwards.
8. Cut out lime store, purifier room & meter room. Fold tabs, glue lime store
pitched roof via tab 11, glue to base and retort house, matching and
folding number tabs inwards, fold and glue tabs 9 & 10 to retort house
wall.
9. Cut out chimney stack, fold edges as marked and glue to base and the
end of the retort house. The two Chimneys are folded and glued onto the
stack via the tabs.
