Abstract
The term cultureme is very enlightening for translation and must be studied in
translations. However, this term is not known in Turkish. The term cultureme can be used to
capture culture-specific elements and apply them as a translation process in translation.
Cultureme is a complex term which was first used by Fernando Poyatos in 1976. The
Estonian-Swedish linguist Els Oksaar introduced it into German-language research in 1983
and used it together with the sociological term behaviorem. In comparison to behaviorem,
Oksaar understands cultureme in general as the culturally shaped standard situations of
people's communicative actions and behavior, such as thanking, complimenting, greeting,
remaining silent, etc. Cultureme thanking, for example, is realized through socioculturally
shaped behaviors such as greetings through verbal, para-linguistic, non-verbal (shaking
hands), extra-verbal, i.e., behavioral nouns. There are verbal and nonverbal culturemes.
Culturemes are abstract units: They are applied differently in different communicative acts,
with generation-, gender- and relationship-specific aspects being effective. Their realization
happens through behavioremes, which can be verbal, para-linguistic, non-verbal and extra-
verbal. In this paper, the concept of cultureme is discussed in terms of translation and
introduced into Turkish for the first time.
