Theory
◦ Viscosity is the property of fluid which oposes the relative motion
between two surfaces of fluid that are moving at different velocities.
It forces other adjacentnparts of liquid ti move along with it causing
internal friction between the molecules, which ultimately leads to
reduce rate of flow.
Viscosity of liquids is affected by temperature. The viscosity of liquid
decreases rapidly. As temperature increases intermolecular forces
decreases and molecules are able to interact without being weighed
down by other.
It is given by.
F/A = n dv/dr
Where, dv/dr= Sheer rate
n= Viscosity
Factors affecting rate of viscosity
1. Temperature
2. Concentration
3. Attractive force
4. Particle Size
Temperature:-
In liquids, when the temperature increases the particles move faster and
begin to move away from each other. Because the particles are moving around more than
they can flow more their viscosity is lower.
Concentration:-
Concentration is the amount of substance that is dissolved in specific
volume
An increase in the concentration will usually result in increase in viscosity.

Factors affecting rate of viscosity
Attractive Force:
▪ Particles of same substance have an attractive forcenon another. The stronger the attraction of
particles, the higher the viscosity.
Particle size:
▪ The size of particle of substance would greatly affect the Viscosity. Smaller particles can move easily
past each other and can therefore flow faster having lower viscosity and large particles would mean a
higher viscosity.
Procedure
1. Select the liquid from list
2. Mark lables ,A,B,C,D on beakers.
3. Now,fill the liquid in the beaker.
4.Click start button on the stopwatch, when liquid reaches lable D”.
5. Note the flow time on stopwatch.
6. Calculate the viscosity coefficient of liquid.
Liquid Boiling Point ( C) Mass (g) Density(kg/m3)
◦Nitrobenzene 14= 20 c
Room temperature 13.8 13.9
◦ Mass of water = 20.06 g
◦ Mass of toluene = 21.55 g
◦ Mass of nitrobenzene = 30.01 g
PRECAUTION
1. The liquids must be poured and weighted carefully
2. Wastage of chemicals should be avoided.
