Topic: Polarity of Molecules Type of Activity: Identification
Learning Target: Activity Numbers:

Concept notes:
• Polarity- separation of electric charge leading to a molecule or its chemical groups having an
electric dipole moment.
• In the concept of polarity, molecules can be categorized into 2 groups, the “Polar” and “Non-
Polar”
• In determining whether a molecule is polar or non-polar, the first step we need to do is to find the
difference in electronegativity of the elements involved.
• If the DEN (Difference in electronegativity) is 0- 0.49, it is non-polar. If the DEN is 0.5 or higher,
then it is polar.
• In molecules with 3 or more atoms involved, If the DEN shows it has polar bonds (DEN- 0.5 or
higher), then we need to use their molecular geometry, but if all the DEN is 0- 0.49, then it is
automatically non-polar. Molecules with net dipole moment = 0 are non-polar. Molecules with
net dipole moment not equals to zero are polar.
• In drawing the dipole moment vector, the arrow head must be facing the element with higher EN,
while the one end with cross sign should face the element with lower EN.
• Example of dipole moment vector illustration:

Direction: Draw the dipole moment vector for each molecules and identify whether the molecules are
polar or non-polar. (Use the pauling’s electronegativity values in determining the EN of each
elements)
