WEEKLY LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
Science 7, Quarter 3, Week 5

The Characteristics of Light

Name______________________________________________ Section:_____________

Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

Explain color and intensity of light in terms of its wave characteristics.

Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the varied chemical sources that produced different light

intensity.
2. Describe the visible light in terms of waves.
3. Describe the properties of light such as intensity and colors.
4. Explore the characteristics of color lights such as energy,
frequency, and wavelength through the spectrum wheel.
5. Explain the importance of color in our daily life.

Time Allotment: 5 days

Key Concepts

 In the previous lesson, you learned to describe the characteristics of

sound using the concepts of wavelength, velocity, and amplitude.
 In these activity sheets, you will be describing the color and intensity
of light in terms of its wave characteristics.
 Primitive people had no reliable source of light during the long nights
until eventually, it was discovered that rubbing two objects together
would produce fire.
 A chemical energy is released in the form of heat and light when a fire
burns. When this happens, the burning fuel, whether it is grass,
wood, oil, or some other combustible materials, emits hot gases
resulting from the enormous chemical energy generated during
combustion thereby making atoms in the gas glow or incandesce.
 Today, several chemical sources are used to produce light. At this
modern era, colorful lights are seen at night.

 The intensity of light is a measure of its brightness. The brightness of

light depends on the source and the distance from the source. This
can be qualitative in which the observation depends on the person’s
perception.

Activity 2. My Physical Distancing

What you need:

any source of light at home (improvised lamp, 100-watt bulb, 25-watt bulb,
40-watt fluorescent), meter stick
What to do:

Direction: Follow the following procedure properly.

1. From the source of light, measure 1 meter, 2 meters, 3 meters, 4

meters and 5 meters. Place a marker.
2. Position yourself 1 meter away from the source of light, then
observe the brightness.
3. Repeat step 2, now at 2 meters and then 3 meters, 4 meters and 5
meters away from the light source.
4. Write your observations and rank of its brightness (rank 1 is
brightest (most intense), 5 is least bright or least intense) in the
table below:
DISTANCE FROM THE OBSERVATION RANK
SOURCE OF LIGHT (m)
1

Guide Question:
1. How would you relate the apparent brightness of light with the
distance from the source? _____________________________________

Rubrics for scoring:
1 point- The response is not correct.
3 points-The response is partially correct.
5 points-The response is correct, very insightful and detailed.

 Visible light has a very tiny fraction of the whole electromagnetic

spectrum. However, it contains the only portion of frequencies to
which the rods and cones of the human eye respond. The wavelengths
between 400 and 700 nanometers are the only ones that humans are

typically able to visualize; the rest of the electromagnetic spectrum is
invisible.
 As a tiny part of the electromagnetic spectrum, visible light has the
same characteristics with the other members. The frequency and
wavelength of light are related by the speed of light which is constant
(about 3 x 108 m/s).
 The wavelength (λ) of light is the distance between corresponding
points in two adjacent light cycles, and the frequency (ν) of light is
the number of waves that pass a particular point in every one second.
The energy can be taken as a product of Planck’s constant (6.63 x 10-
34 J/s) and frequency. The Planck’s constant is equal to 4.14 x 10-15

eV.s (electron volt second).

 Wavelength has units of length (meter, nanometer) while frequency
has units of per second or hertz (Hz) and energy has eV.
 When white light passes through a prism, it is separated into its
constituent colors such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and
violet. These are the components of the visible light spectrum.
 You can separate light into its colors also by allowing a light to strike
a CD to form rainbow colors.

Activity 3. My Spectrum Wheel

What you need:

Spectrum Wheel Pattern, Button Fastener (Automatic) or thumbtacks or any

substitute available at home, Glue or Paste, paper and scissors

What to do:

Direction: Part 1: Color Wheel

1.Cut the two art files that make up the wheel on pages 11 and 12.

2.Using a pair of scissors, cut along the lines drawn on the top wheel. Cut
the two sides of the wheel. Create a small hole near the center of the wheel.

3.Punch a hole into the center of the two wheels together. You may use a
button fastener (automatic) to hold the two wheels securely in place, one on
top of the other but they should be free to rotate relative to each other.

4.When you see a region of the COLOR SPECTRUM show up in the open
window which correspond to the region of Wavelength, Frequency and
Energy, there you know that you have done it right.

Rubric for scoring:

10 points-Accurate, properly fastened, can be rotated with ease
8 points-Accurate, improperly fastened, can not be rotated with ease
6 points-Less accurate, improperly fastened and aligned, can not
rotate
Direction: Part 2: Characteristics of Light

1.Try out your Color Spectrum Wheel by positioning the innermost of the
flaps on Color Spectrum. This will simultaneously position the other flap to
Wavelength, Frequency and Energy.

2.Spin the upper wheel to create combinations.

3.Fill in a table below with the corresponding combinations you have

observed using your Spectrum Wheel. Red is already done for you.

Note: 1nm (nanometer) =1 x 10-9 m which means that 625 nm is equal to

625 x 10-9 m

1THz (terahertz) = 1 x 1012 Hz which means that 405 THz is equal to

405 x 1012 Hz or 405 x 1012/second

Direction: Write True if the statement is correct and False if it is not before
the space provided for.
