Course Number: Math 1 Course Title: Fundamentals of Mathematics
Topic Title: Addition and Subtraction of Whole Numbers Activity Title: Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers
Objective: To add and subtract whole numbers.
Reference: Beyond Math By Loly Ong, Angelyn R. Lao, Maria Jenny Tan, & Judy W. Sy
CONCEPT NOTES

 Addition is the process of combining two or more numbers. The numbers to be added are called addends and the
answer is called sum or total.
Steps to Consider in Addition
Step 1: Align the digits according to place value.
Step 2: Add from right to left by place value.
Step 3: Regroup if needed.
Example 1: Find the sum of 5 496 and 2 338.
Solution:
5 496
+2 338
7 834
Therefore, 5 496 +2 338 = 7 834.

 Subtraction is the process of removing a number called subtrahend from a number called minuend. The result is
called difference.
Steps to Consider in Subtraction
Step 1: Align the digits according to place value.
Step 2: Subtract from right to left by place value.
Step 3: Regroup if needed.
Example 2: Subtract 462 from 7 258.
Solution:
7258
−462
6796
Therefore, 7 258 − 462 = 6 796.
Checking the Answer for Subtraction
 If adding the difference and subtrahend is equal to the minuend, then the value of the difference is correct.
Example 3: Find the difference of 12 billion and 9 billion, and check the answer.
Solution: a. 12 billion b. 3 billion
− 9 billion + 9 billion
3 billion 12 billion
Since the computation above satisfies the conditions for checking the difference, therefore the difference we got in (a) is
correct.
MASTERY PRACTICE: Arrange the following numbers in columns, then add/subtract.
Take Note: DO NOT USE CALCULATOR OR CELLPHONE.
1. 612 458 + 93 510 + 100 000 + 999
2. 456 + 934 + 311 + 587 + 111 + 222
3. 1 111 + 2 222 + 3 333 + 4 444 + 5 555 + 6 666
4. 156 000 − 2 394
5. 600 𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠 − 599 𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠
6. 431 009 − 310 490
CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING/EXERCISE/ASSIGNMENT

Instruction: Solve the following operations and check your answers.

1. 456 + 874 + 154 + 88 + 964 + 101

2. 1 234 + 5 678 + 9 876 + 5 432 + 1 000
3. 98 765 + 43 210
4. 300 006 + 306 000 + 360 000 + 300 060 + 300 600
