CONCEPT NOTES

Changing Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers

An improper fraction can be changed into a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator, the
resulting quotient is the whole number part, the remainder is the numerator, and the divisor is the denominator of the
mixed number. If no remainder in dividing, then we have a whole number as our answer.
Example 1: Change the following improper fractions to mixed numbers.
8 7 89 175
a. b. c. d.
4 3 56 33
Solution:
a. 8 ÷ 4 = 2
1
b. 7 ÷ 3 = 2 𝑅 1, therefore, the mixed number is 2 .
3
33
c. 89 ÷ 56 = 1 𝑅 33, therefore, the mixed number is 1 .
56
10
d. 175 ÷ 33 = 5 𝑅 10, therefore, the mixed number is 5 .

Changing a Mixed Number to an Improper Fraction
To change a mixed number to an improper fraction, we multiply the whole number part by the denominator and
add the numerator; the result is the numerator of the improper fraction. The denominator of the improper fraction is the
same as the denominator of the mixed number.
Example 2: Change the following mixed numbers to improper fractions.
7 8 2
a. 6 b. 12 c. 163
11 15 23
Solution:
7 (6×11+7) 73
a. 6 = =
11 11 11
8 (12×15+8) 188
b. 12 = =
15 15 15
2 (163×23+2) 3751
c. 163 = =
