SIMPLE ACTIVITY: Reflective Analysis

Analyze the following print advertisements and determine if these

are ethical or not.
Consider the following guide questions in your analysis.

1. What is the message of the ad?

2. How is the message underscored? What semiotics are used (text?

images? others?)
3. Is there any individual or group that may be offended by the ad?
4. Is there another way of presenting or delivering the message?
5. Do you think the ad is ethical?

Reflective Analysis. Briefly explain

your assessment of the ad, with
focus on the five questions.

The advertisement attached here uses semiotics with the combination of an image, symbol and texts
trying to promote a body wash that actually improves the looks of the user’s skin. Here, the message
that it wants to portray and tell its customers by just merely looking at it, is that once this product has
been used, our skin will brighten, and will achieve a flawless glowing skin in just a span of time after use.
But this certain kind of advertisement may not have the same meaning the way other consumers see it,
most specially in the American society, since in their country they had an issue and varying perspective
with regards to racism. For me, this is unethical way of promoting this kind of product even though the
intention of this company who made this are pure and does not intend to offend other people. This
advertisement has used and accentuated cultural insensitivity to some black people because they might
trigger and offend them for using darker skin to signify blemished skin that needs to be improved in
order to make yourself look better which is not true but rather should be normalize with today’s
generation because being black and dark doesn’t make you less of a person.

I think there would be a better way of advertising such kind of products that would consider cultural
differences, etiquettes and issues in the world and not sounding as being against with the black
community. I think one of the best ways to promote this is by not using any comparisons to other
people’s skin tone but rather focuses on the result of having a clear and fresh skin upon using the
product. Making such kinds of adjustments with the way the business world works will make a better
and effective means of conveying the message they want to communicate with their consumers.
