1 Scope
This specification defines the requirements for the receipt, storage, handling, erection,
assembly, and field inspection of structural and miscellaneous steel. Offshore structures
are excluded from this specification.
The Process Industry Practices PIP STS05130 “Structural and Miscellaneous Steel
Erection” in its entirety, shall constitute the basis of this standard.

2 Conflicts and Deviations


Any conflict between this document and other applicable Mandatory Saudi Aramco
Engineering Requirements (MSAERs) shall be addressed in writing to the EK&RD
Coordinator.
Any deviation from the requirements herein shall follow internal company procedure
SAEP-302.

3 References
The selection of material and equipment, and the design, construction, maintenance, and
repair of equipment and facilities covered by this Specification shall comply with the
references listed below, in addition to the references already listed in PIP STS05130-18

4 Modifications to Process Industry Practice STS05130


The following paragraph numbers refer to PIP standard STS05130 dated August, 2018,
which is part of this specification. The text in each paragraph is an addition, exception,
modification, or deletion to STS05130 as noted. Paragraph numbers not appearing in
STS05130 are new paragraphs to be inserted in numerical order.
1 (Deletion) Delete in its entirety.
2.1 (Deletion) Delete in its entirety.
4.1.1.1 (Deletion) Delete in its entirety.
4.1.1.13 (Modification) Delete in its entirety and replace with ”Nondestructive
testing of welded joints shall be performed in accordance with 12-SAMSS-
007.”
4.1.1.14 (Addition) Minimum bolt pretension values such as those listed for U.S.
customary units in RCSC Specification for Structural Joints Using High-
Strength Bolts can be obtained for metric bolt sizes by using an equal
percentage of the specified minimum tensile strength of the bolts as
specified in ASTM Specifications for tests of full size ASTM A325 and
A490 bolts.
4.1.3.1.2.d (Modification) Delete “Any other applicable federal, state or local
requirements” and replace with “SAES-M-100, Saudi Aramco Building
Code and Saudi Aramco Construction Safety Manual”.
4.2 (Modification) Delete the reference to PIP STS05120 and replace it
with 12-SAMSS-007.
4.3.2.1.d (Modification) Delete “Applicable state, municipal, or local regulations or
codes” and replace with “SAES-M-100, Saudi Aramco Building Code,.
SAES-M-001 and Saudi Aramco Construction Safety Manual”.
4.3.2.2.d (Addition) The Saudi Aramco Construction Safety Manual.
4.3.4.5 (Modification) Delete “Unless otherwise specified in the contract
documents, base plate shall be grouted in accordance with PIP STS03600
or PIP STS03601” and replace with “Grouting of base plates shall be in
accordance with SAES-Q-010 or SAES-Q-011 and other Contract
Documents if this work is included in Erector’s contract.” Also delete “in
accordance with PIP STS03600 or PIP STS03601 as applicable” at the end
of the section.

4.3.5.7 (Addition) Markings are not required if direct tension indicator washers
have been used.
4.3.5.8 (Addition) When assembled, all joint surfaces, including those adjacent to
the bolt heads, nuts or washers, shall be free of burrs, dirt and other foreign
materials that would prevent solid seating of parts.
4.3.5.9 (Addition) When impact wrenches are used, wrenches of adequate
capacity with sufficient air supply shall be provided by the Erector to
perform the required tightening of each bolt.
4.3.5.10 (Addition) Relaxation of Pretension in Hot Dip Galvanized bolts may be
significant and therefore re-pretensioning of the bolts is required
subsequent to the initial pretensioning (see Section 8.2 of RCSC
Specification for Structural Joints Using High-Strength Bolts).
Pretensioned bolts that are hot dip galvanized shall be re-pretensioned to
the prescribed level after the initial period of “Settling-in” of five days
unless this loss can be allowed for in design.
4.3.6.1 (Addition) AWS D1.1, AWS D1.3 or AWS D1.8 as applicable.
4.3.7.7 (Addition) For anchor rod repair solutions, refer to AISC Design Guide 1 –
Base Plate and Anchor Rod Design.
4.3.9.3 (Addition) For fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) grating and grating
connections, refer to 12-SAMSS-023.
4.3.12.1 (Modification) Delete the reference to PIP STS05120 and replace it with
12-SAMSS-007.
4.3.12.5 (Addition) Damage to steel coatings that will be inaccessible after erection
shall be repaired according to the requirements of 12-SAMSS-007 prior to
erection.
4.3.13 (Addition) For steel structures that use standardized collar components for
connections, installation and erection shall be in accordance with written
instructions and specifications from the component manufacturer.
