CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
Introduction

Life is a school, people never stop learning. Almost half of a person’s life is spent

in school by studying. There are lots of reasons why attending school is important

because it provides wealth of knowledge and information that can be used in everyday

life. Aside from that, school molds the students and helps them build a strong relationship

with others.

One of the many reasons why students are seen active, energetic and enthusiastic

in their scholastic performance isthe variety of foods they ingest. That’s the reason why

the school has its own canteen, which offers different foods that are healthy and are

approved by the health-related agencies such as DOH (Department of Health). Students

need a balanced nutrition intake because their physical development and activity are

dramatically increasing (Kim, 2002.) But, there are some demands of students regarding

foods that the school canteen cannot provide simply because some of their demands are

those that are not allowed to be sold in school.

Some students would prefer buying foods outside the school premise due to their

unanswered demands. Some can find the food they want to eat outside the school so they

would likely go out and look for a store that answers their demands. The other reason is

that there are a lot of students who prefer to buy foods with lesser price especially those

students whobudget their allowance. Some of them are practical thinkers that if they can

buy foods with lesser price why would they buy those foods that have a higher price?

This research study came to life because the researchers had observed that some of the
SHS-Students in SFC-Guihulngan prefer to buy food in school cafeteria but, some of

them also prefer to buy foods outside the school premise. Due to the curiosity of the

researchers they want to seek answers with regards to this.

This study intends to investigate the effects of the food and its price in school

canteens to senior high school students’ demands and satisfaction. Also, this study gives

insights to students and teachers as customers who prefer to buy in the school

cafeteria. This will inform the school canteen to innovate their strategies, the types of

foodstuff and their pricing. This research basically came to life due to what most of the

researchers have observed in Saint Francis College-Guihulngan.
