WHO AM I IN THE CYBERWORLD? (DIGITAL SELF)

A. Selective Self-presentation and Impression Management

According to Goffman (1959) and Leary (1995); “self-presentation is the

process of controlling how one is perceived by other people” and is the key to
relationship inception and development constructing positive information of self to
cater the feedback from others.

Anything posted online should be considered “public” no matter what the

“privacy” settings are. Personal identity is the interpersonal level of self that
differentiates the individual as unique from others (Example: Lu and Le are twins
but they have different standards in relationship that makes them both different),
while social identity is the level of the self where the individual is identified by
his/her group membership. (Example: Raised in a family of Lumad you are
considered to be one of them).

Belk (2013) explained that sharing

ourselves is no longer new and has been
practiced as soon as human beings were
formed. Digital devices help us share and keep information broadly showcasing
about our daily activities, connections and ideas. Diaries that were once private or
shared with close friends are now posted as blogs which can be viewed to anyone
like Facebook, Instagram, or Snapchat.

As Schwarz (2010) mentioned, we have

entered an extraordinary era of self-
portraiture. Social media applications are
now a key of self-representation nowadays.
As a result, people tend to “overshare” their
personal information. Sometimes, people
become unaware of the information they
share online. Furthermore, it provides a
more complete narration of self and gives
people an idealized view of how they should
be remembered. Many teenagers, as well as
adults, share even more intimate details
with their partner like their password to
ensure intimacy and trust or worst an
expression of paranoia and distrust with the
partner.

The lack of privacy in many aspects of social media takes the user more
vulnerable, leading to compulsive checking on newsfeeds and adding tweets. People
would like to remain updated. One of the main reasons for so much sharing and
self-disclosure online is the so-called “disinhibition effect”. The resulting effect
causes people to believe that they are able to express their “true” self better online
than the personal. Seemingly, self-revelation can be therapeutic to others especially
together with self-reflection.

Foucalt (1998) said that confession, along with contemplation, self-examination,

learning, reading, and writing self-critical letters to friends are a part of the
“technologies of the self” through which we seek to purge and cleanse ourselves.
Both the number and feedback of readers provide self-validation for the writer.
Confessional blogs may also be therapeutic for the audience to read, allowing both
sincere empathy and the voyeuristic appeal of witnessing a public confession.

B. Gender and Sexual Online

According to Marwick (2013), the term “sex”, “gender” and “sexuality” are often
thought as synonymous but they are actually distinct. Sex is the biological state
corresponding to what we call as a “man” or a “woman” based on genitalia and
genetic difference. Gender is the social orientation of a person that is manifested in
behavior, personality, preference, and capabilities such as “homosexual,
heterosexual, bisexual, and queer”. Sexuality is an individual expression and
understanding of desire and is often experiences as fluid.

C. Performing Gender Online

Theorist Judith Butler (1990)

conceptualized gender as performance.
She argued that gender is performative,
in that it is produced through millions of
individual actions rather than comes
naturally to men and women. Internet users are free to actively choose which
gender or sexuality they are going to portray with the possibility of creating
alternate identities.
