(Hammer and Press Forging)

1. Scope

This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the dimensional tolerances and


deviations for thickness , length, width, height , centre-to-centre dimension, fillet
and edge radii, draft angle, mismatch, camber, eccentricity of deep hole,
residual flash and trimmed flat, burr, ejector mark, surface unevenness, defor-
mation at sheared end, and local deformation of unforged portion of carbon steel
and alloy steel die forgings (l)manufactured by hammer and press, hereinafter
referred to a s the "forgings".
Note (l) The forgings herein stated imply the final products at the time of
delivery.

2. Definitions

The principal terms used in this standard are a s defined below.


(1) thichess Thickness of a section perpendicular to the die parting
plane (see Fig. 1).
(2) length, width and height Length and width are those which are parallel
to the die parting plane of forging dies, or as nearly so as practical con-
siderations will permit. Height is a dimension that is in depth direction
perpendicular to the same die parting plane (see Figs. 1 to 4).

(3) centre-to-centre dimension Dimension which is measured along a line


connecting two centres contained within a profile of forging (see Fig. 5).
However, a dimension which involves a bend as given in Fig. 6 is not
dealt with as the centre distance.

(4) fillet and edge radii Radii which are to be given at edge and fillet
(see Fig. 7).

(6) mismatch Amount of mismatch between the upper and the lower dies in

(8) eccent-ricity of deep hole Eccentricity between the centre of top surface
and that of the bottom face, The eccentricity applies to a hole of depth
deeper than its diameter (see Fig. 10).

(9) residual flash and trimmed flat Residual flash is defined as portion
from the body of the forging to the trimmed edge of the flash
(see Fig. 11). Trimmed flat is defined as an amount of insufficiency
of wall relative to the imaginary intersection point of draft in the
drawing (see Fig. 12).

(11) ejector marks Sunken or raised mark remained on a forging, when a


forging dies incorporating ejector has been used.
(12) surface unevenness Pit formed by scale during forging and pit formed
during surface dressing.
(13) deformation at sheared end Deformation arising from shearing at the
end of unforged bar stock (see Fig. 14).

3.1 The tolerance and deviations for forgings have two grades; fine grade and
common grade. However, tolerances and deviations for fillet and edge radii,
draft angle, eccentricity for deep hole, burr, ejector mark, surface unevenness,
deformation at sheared end and local deformation at unforged bar stock are not
graded.

3.2 The application of grades shall be as provided below.


(1) The common grade is enough for dimensional accuracy of general use,
and applies to standard products.
(2) The fine grade applies to the products which require the dimensions
more accurate than those of common grade.
It is allowed to apply this tolerance to all the dimensions for one
piece of forging, but it should be preferable to apply only to specific
dimensions which particularly require fine grade tolerances.

4. Elements Required Calculation for Determination of Tolerances

For the determination of tolerances, calculation shall be made on the basis


of the elements given below in addition to dimensions.
(1) Mass A net mass of a forging.
(2) Difficdty, for Working According to Materials Used The difficulty for
working according to materials used shall be classified into the following
two categories :
Mi: Steel less than 0 . 6 5 % in carbon content and less than 5 % in total
alloying elements (Mn, Ni, C r , Mo, V and W )
M2: Steel not less than 0.65 %I in carbon content, o r not less than 5 % in
total alloying elements (Mn, Ni, C r , Mo, V and W )
Remark: Permissible maximum contents specified in the standards on
steel materials apply to determination of above categories.

(3) Shape Complexity Factors The shape complexity factors shall be


classified a s given in the table below after calculating by the use of the
following formula:

The mass (or volume) for overall shape is defined as the mass (or volume)
for the overall shape enveloped in the maximum dimensions of the forging
(see Figs. 16 and 17).

(4) Shapes of Die Parting Line The shapes of die parting lines of moulds
shall be classified into the following two shapes (see Fig. 18):
(a) Flat or symmetry
(b) Asymmetry

5, Application of Tolerances for Particular Shapes

For the forgings of particular shape, tolerances shall be determined s o a s to


include the following elements in addition to the calculation elements of 4.
(1) For a forging with thin flange, if 5 S O . 2 0 (see Fig. 19), regarding its
complexity a s s4and also considering the mass of the flange of d in
diameter and e in thickness as the mass of the forging, the tolerance for
the forging shall be determined. However, when this tolerance is smaller
than that obtained by the procedure of 4 . , this shall not be applicable.

(2) In the case of a forging having a flange with high projection, i f its height
is more than 1.5 times the end diameter, the thickness tolerance other
than that of the largest dimension h to the end shall be obtained by using
the flange thickness e plus 1.5 times the diameter d (see Fig. 20: t = ~ + i , ~ ~ z )

6. Use of Tables Giving Tolerance and Deviation for Thickness, Length and
Height

6.1 Tolerance and Deviation for Thickness


(1) The following elements shall be included in the calculation elements:
(a) M a s s of a forging
(b) Difficulty ( M l or M2) of working according to materials used
(c) Shape complexity factor (To determine Si, S2, S3 or S4, calculation
shall be made.)

(2) Table for fine grade o r Table for common grade specified in 7 . 1 shall
be selected according to the grade to be applied. At first, find out a
mass in question in the column of "mass division" on the left side of
the Table, and next proceed horizontally to the right along the horizontal
line. When the "difficulty for working according to materials used" is M i ,
proceed further horizontally. If the difficulty above-mentioned is M2,
proceed downward to the point of intersection with the vertical line of
M2 along the diagonally descending line. Then proceed further along
the horizontal line to the right (in the case of Ma, the horizontal line
to be followed is altered to the second line below.).
Also for the shape complexity factor, in the same manner as above,
i f the factor is Si, proceed to the right and, i f it is S2, proceed down-
ward along the diagonally descending line to the point of intersection
with the vertical line of S2. Then proceed further along the horizontal
line to the right (The horizontal line to be followed is altered to the
second line below for S3 and to the third line below for a.).
Further proceed to the right, and find the numerical values which
position at a point of intersection with the thickness dimension in ques-
tion in the column of "division of nominal dimension". The values thus
found a r e the tolerance and deviations required for the thickness. In the
use of the table above-mentioned, the largest dimens on of thickness shall
generally be used as the nominal dimension.

6.2 Tolerance and Deviation for Length, Width and Height


(1) The following elements shall be included in the calculation elements:
(a) Mass of forging
(b) Difficulty ( M i o r Ma) for working according to materials used
(c) Shape complexity factor (To determine Si, S2, Sa, or 54, calculation
shall be made a )
(d) Grade (fine grade o r common grade)

(2) Table for fine grade o r Table for common grade specified in 7.2 shall
be selected according to the grade to be applied. In the Table, tolerance
and deviation for length, width, and height shall be obtained, by ñnding
out the mass in question in the column of "division of massff and of
length, width, and height in question in the column of "division of
nominal dimensionff, i n the same way as that given in the above clause.
In the use of the above table, the largest dimension of length, width,
or height shall generally be used as the nominal dimension.

Remarks 1. The deviations for a dimension from centre to a surface (see Fig. 4)
and the deviations for a dimension of step within a forging die shall
be taken as + l/3 and 4 3 of their dimensional tolerances.
2. The deviations for inside dimension, signs +and - shall be inversed.
3 Where any deformation exists at the sheared end portion, the length
of the shorter side tapered by shearing shall be adopted as the length.

7.14 Deviations for Local Deformation of Unforged Portion The deviations


for diameter of unforged bar stock which have been locally deformed shall be the
same as the deviations of common grade applied to the nominal dimension cor-
responding to the diameter of unforged bar stock specified in 7.2. The length
of the portion shall be 1 . 5 times the diameter d of unforged bar stock and be
limited up to 100 mm.
