Individual Programme of Study (IPS)

Proposal for Level 3
Element 2 - (33.3r% of the overall mark)
Individual Programme of Study (IPS) 500 words (word processed).
Presentation of the IPS

Aim
Your IPS should describe the subject, direction, context, level of ambition and
proposed outcomes of your final year programme of study. It should also help you to
structure your thoughts about the year and include details of your intended
dissertation.

It should focus on the what, why and how of your programme. It must be word-
processed and roughly 500 words in length. You will also need to prepare a
presentation, based on your 500 words. This can include images and will need to
‘performed’ to staff and peers and submitted in a digital format.

Use the following headings as a guide when writing your proposal for your IPS:

Content
What is the subject of your programme of study? (Can you give it a title?) What are
you interested in? What are you investigating? What is motivating your work? What
aspects of this subject are of particular interest? How broad or specific is the
territory you are looking at?

Dissertation
Ideally you should align the concerns and subject matter of your unit 9 dissertation
to the objectives of your practical work for unit10. So think, how could your
dissertation support your studio practice and your ideas for unit 10?

Media and Skills

What media are you likely to use to develop your ideas and realise your proposals? Is
the work about exploring any particular media? What skills will you be using / do you
want to acquire to help you explore it? This needs careful consideration now as you
may take the opportunity of the summer break to do an internship, and if you do it
makes sense to work in an environment that best suits your aims and objectives.

Context
Who else is working in this field? Who are the key practitioners/designers/groups?
Who is the intended audience for the work and where do you see it being
seen/exhibited/sold? Can you comment on the level of production it is aimed at, i.e.
one-off, small batch, large scale (mass).

Potential Outcomes
In broad terms, what do you imagine you might produce in terms of final proposals?
Of course units 9 & 10 are long projects and your ideas will no doubt alter as you
come across new material. Your IPS is not set in stone and you will have the
opportunity to update it throughout the coming year, so do not be afraid of setting
yourself specific targets, as if they become inappropriate you will be able to alter
them
