I:
Behavior is the reactions and actions of an individual or group to other individuals or groups of
people, events, or the environment. It is influenced by many things like age, personality,
interactions with others, culture, home environment and gender. Student behavior is the way
children and young people behave at school.
There are three types of behavior in school. First, Positive behavior includes cooperating,
paying attention in class and sharing with classmates. Second, Poor student behavior includes
talking when supposed to be working, and being late in class. And lastly, antisocial behavior is
a behavior that is harmful and not accepted in society, such as drug and alcohol use, graffiti and
bullying.
It is said that behavior can be learned and individual’s environment affects the behavior, it can be
positive, poor or antisocial. Interventions are applied to control or manage the behavior of the
students.
Behavior can greatly affect the academics of the students. Learners with disruptive behavior
affects the performance of the whole classroom. If students have low motivational skills they are
most likely to get a poor marks in academics and students with disorders are most likely to fail if
not given a proper attention of the teacher together with the parents.
Behavior management is a whole school approach. It includes creating a positive environment
for learning and uses strategies that encourage positive behavior in schools. It also involves a
range of strategies to reduce the chance of poor or antisocial behavior. Behavior management
helps the teachers on how to deal with the students with hostile behaviors and make the
classroom interactive and harmonious. This is a must have skill of a teacher to keep the
classroom environment at peace.
A behavior management plan is a plan made up of procedures that are in place to hold students
accountable for their behavior, encourage positive behavior, and to eliminate scolding or
lecturing, which is rarely, if ever, effective in changing behavior. Normally a behavior
management plan is set to cater the students at the very start of the class. It is laid down by the
teachers as their universal management plan and this will help them to gather information on
how they can improve their behavior management plan.
Discipline comes from the word ‘disciple’ which means ‘to instruct’. School discipline is about
teaching children the rules of acceptable behavior, and helping them to understand what is
expected of them in their society.
Punishment is when a negative and unpleasant consequence is given to an individual so that
they will not repeat the same behavior again. Punishment is present in order to control or manage
the students’ behavior to make them think what could be the consequences of their actions.
Counselling is a process that helps people to cope with issues and reach decisions affecting their
lives. Counselling happens when a strong reinforcement is needed. This must be done with or
without the parents concern.
Behavior management is one of the responsibility of the teachers, staff and stakeholders. Once
the students is inside their premises it is their duty to mold the students to be a better individual.
Though corporal punishments are removed by the law still there are ways on how to deal with
the students behavior in a more positive and peaceful way.
