Clean the surfaces of the metallic material to be coated by removing rust, loose dust, welding
slag, dirt, oil, grease, and any other foreign substance. The surfaces to be painted will be
prepared with an abrasive product just before applying the base coat of paint. All surface
irregularities, such as burrs, weld spatter, etc., must be removed in accordance with the
requirements of NACE SPO 178 Condition D before proceeding with the surface cleaning
method. The surface cleaning method must strictly comply with the specifications of the Coating
Surface Preparation standard. Care should be taken to prevent grease, oil or any other organic
matter (including boot marks and perspiration) from coming into contact with the cleaned surface
prior to the application of the first coat of primer. Surface cleaning should be coordinated with
painting activities, and care should be taken to start primer application immediately after the
surface cleaning step is completed. If the cleaned surface does not meet the standards and
requirements of the standard, the surface cleaning procedure must be done again. If the cleaned
surface remains uncoated overnight, the surface cleaning procedure will need to be done again.
Remove all traces of cleaning products from surfaces, crevices and corners to be painted by
brushing with clean brushes, blowing with clean, dry air, or by vacuum cleaning. The Contractor
assumes all risks related to the application of the primer with the use of dehumidifiers.

Coatings shall consist of a two (2) coat epoxy paint system and shall be applied in accordance
with the manufacturer's instructions and the requirements of SSPC PA-1. Paint should be
applied to the entire length of the pipe and its accessories. The total dry film thickness of the
paint should be within the range recommended by the manufacturer. Paint should be removed
with rags or other absorbent material at a distance of 50 mm from the ends of the pipe and
fittings. It will not be allowed to mask the ends. The temperature of the cleaned steel surface
should be at least 3 degrees C above the dew point. Surface temperatures should not fall below
10 degrees C, unless otherwise specified in the manufacturer's data sheet, and relative humidity
should not exceed 85% during coating application as stipulated in the ASTM E-337 standard.
Provide heaters and dehumidifiers as necessary to maintain required lining conditions.

Dry film thickness will be randomly checked in accordance with SSPC PA-2 requirements at
Restriction Level 3 on coated surfaces after each coat is applied and cure time is met. For pipe
liner readings, a minimum of three spot measurements will be taken at each end of the pipe. The
exterior coating inspection procedure will conform to the specifications of appendix 7 of the SSPC
PA-2 standard. If the Inspector determines that the film thickness is not uniform and does not
meet specifications, the Contractor shall apply additional coats at no cost to the Owner until the
specified film thickness is obtained. If the dry film thickness exceeds the manufacturer's maximum
allowable thickness, the Contractor shall remove and reapply the coating in those areas at no
additional cost to the Owner. The Contractor shall engage an independent NACE Certified
Coating Inspector to verify dry coating layer thicknesses in accordance with SSPC PA-2
specifications.

After the paint has dried to its maximum hardness, the ends of all pipes should be closed with
plastic caps manufactured for this purpose.

If, in the opinion of the Engineer or NACE inspector, the coatings exhibit ridges, waves, gouges,
spalling, or if the Holiday test results indicate discontinuity in the coating or improper application,
the Contractor shall be required to remove and reapply the coating without cost to Owner.

3.2 EXTERNAL COATING OF PIPES

SURFACE, ACCESSORIES AND EQUIPMENT (SYSTEM
OF 3 LAYERS)

Refer to System 3 of the attached Tables.

All pipes, accessories and equipment installed on the surface must be protected with a suitable
coating using equipment specially designed for this purpose.
Before coating is applied, the surface of the pipe, fittings and equipment shall be thoroughly
cleaned of all rust, scale, oil, grease and any other material that will interfere with proper adhesion
of the primer coat. The equipment, valves, pumps, motors, actuators, etc., that have been
prepared in the workshop or that have been delivered to the job site with a finish coat, must be
adequately prepared for the application of the coating. The Contractor shall coordinate with the
equipment suppliers and the coating manufacturer for the proper preparation and application of
the product. A certificate from the Coatings Supplier must be provided assuring that the systems
are compatible.

where painting operations are being carried out. Remove all protective materials when appropriate
and before materials, such as tape, become difficult to remove.

Post signs to indicate newly painted areas.

Cover, remove, or otherwise protect finishing fixtures, control piping, pressure gauges, control
devices, and equipment nameplates, as necessary.
Provide protection to electrical and mechanical equipment to prevent paint from entering their
holes or openings.

Carry out daily cleaning of storage and work areas, verifying the elimination of all paint residues,
garbage, rags, thinners, etc. Get rid of containers with leftovers, thinners, rags, brushes, rollers,
etc. in accordance with applicable regulations.

3.8 CLEANING
Touch up and restore damaged finishes as needed. Remove all adhesive tape and glue residue
that may have been left on surfaces.

Remove spilled, dripped, or splashed paint from all surfaces.

3.9 LINER REPAIRS

Repair all damage to pipeline coating systems prior to Holiday Testing the pipeline. This includes
all cuts, tears, voids, scrapes or scars, or other damage caused prior to delivery, or caused
during the handling and installation of the pipe, or from any cause.

Also included are damaged linings where new connections are made to
existing coated pipes or where existing coated pipes are bare or

exposed for any reason.

Also repair the coating affected by the welds and where it has been damaged or broken by the installation of
instrumentation or other accessories.

Repair all discontinuities detected during coating inspection. Use the same coatings for the repair that were used on
the original coating.

ÿ For the repair of buried pipes, System 5 should be used.

3.10 INSPECTION
The Contractor shall engage the services of a NACE Certified Coatings Inspector. The inspector shall submit daily
reports of environmental conditions, including ambient temperature, substrate temperature, relative humidity, and wind
speed/direction.

The surface profile shall be tested in accordance with the requirements of ASTM D4417 Replica Tape. Make sure that
the range of the tape used is adequate.
Include with daily reports.

Before laying the cladding, but after surface preparation, ensure that all dust has been removed. Use clear cellophane
tape to determine the amount of dust from limited surface and other sources that has not been removed.

Press the tape to the surface, peel it off, and visually observe the amount of dust that adheres to the tape. Clean the
test area with acetone or alcohol to remove the tape adhesive from the prepared surface. The test tape showing the
dust particles shall be documented by applying it to the daily inspection report.

Use wet film gauges to check each application per ISO 2808 specifications at a maximum interval of 15 minutes in
order to immediately correct application of low or past film.

Use the dry film gauge to check each coat when dry, and the total thickness of the system when complete.

Use a Holiday type detector to detect and correct system discontinuities according to the specifications of the NACE
SP0188 standard.
